Vietnamese Americans are people who settled in the United States with Vietnamese ethnic origin. According to Pew Research Center, the Vietnamese American population was estimated at 1.6 million in 2010, making up nearly fifty percent of the overseas Vietnamese population in the world. They are also the fourth-largest Asian ethnic community in the United States after Chinese Americans, Indian Americans, and Filipino Americans. The majority of Vietnamese migrated to the United States after the end of the Vietnam War. The early immigrants, refugees from South Vietnam, were evacuated by the US government. For example: Koreans are known for Korean owned grocery stores, Chinese are known for Chinese restaurants, Italians are known for construction occupations, and Vietnamese are known for Vietnamese owned nail salons. According to the statistics from the American Magazine Nail magazine, in the US, there are 374,345 Vietnamese Americans certified nail technicians, making up over 40% the workforce of professional nail technicians in the US. In 2010, there were 279 nail salons in Miami, and 1152 nail salons in Florida by Vietnamese ownership. The success of Vietnamese professional nail industry came from the effort of Tippi Hedren, a Hollywood star, to help Vietnamese refugees to find the stable jobs. In 1975, she visited Vietnamese refugees in Hope Village in Sacramento, California, where twenty Vietnamese women were recently sent to. When she saw these women fascinated by her beautiful nails, Hedren thought of doing something to help them to learn how to do nails. "I noticed that these women were very good with their hands. I thought, why couldn't they learn how to do nails?" Hedren told the Los Angeles Times in an interview in 2008. Then, she took her manicurist to the refugee camp once a week to teach these women to do nails. After that, she convinced a nearby beauty school to help these women find jobs.
