Vietnamese American Identity: Case Study

I am interested in becoming a part of VSA Board because it will allow me to feel closer to my Vietnamese American and Asian American identity. VSA has a sense of inclusivity and openness that will let me be able to identity as a Vietnamese and love Vietnamese culture without adhering to self imposed cultural expectations. I am able to connect with people not only through Vietnamese culture, but also underlying similarities. I would like to be immersed in the community to have that strong relationship with my identity. As a Vietnamese American, I also want to participate in VSA so I can help spread the knowledge of Vietnamese culture, and also create comfort for Asian Americans that lack a sense of community of shared cultures and values. Therefore, I will be able to attend meetings, come to hang outs, get stuff done on time, and be somewhat flexible with my schedule when unexpected things arise. In addition, I have good communication and planning skills, as I have been part of a planning committee for an annual Vietnamese United Methodist Convocation for three years. For example, I am able to communicate with people from different States and somewhat help plan out logistics, agenda/schedule, registration, supplies and activities.

I believe becoming a part of VSA Board will help me develop a good groundwork for leadership skills, including skills of teamwork, and teach me a lot about solid logistics and operations. The knowledge and skills I will learn in VSA Board will help me in the workforce and group relationships and projects because teamwork is important. Considering Facebook and Maize Pages, I believe that having a website will allow VSA to seem more professional. A website can also display important, accessible information and include a documentation of VSA’s history all in one place. By doing so, VSA can further convey its reputation of being a well-established organization and attract incoming students by making it easier for them to find
