There was a total of around 3 million deaths. The United States lost around 58,000 troops lives. South Vietnam lost an estimate of 110,000 troops in the war and an estimate of 415,000 civilian lives. “Estimates of the number of people killed in Indochina range from two and a half million to more than four million. An even greater number were maimed, disfigured, orphaned, displaced or forced to flee as refugees. The Vietnam War was fought for civilians, by civilians and among civilians – and the majority of casualties were civilians” (Costs of Vietnam War). The war also was unwinnable, we faced many things that made us unable to win. The North Vietnamese were way more powerful and ready for the war. Also our government did not think we could win the war so our troops had no hope in them. Lastly the South Vietnam stopped focusing on the war and made us fight without much help or effort from them. “United States had been on the verge of winning in Vietnam, but threw its chance for victory away because of negative press and a resulting failure of political will at home” (Boylan). “The problem, the optimists argued, was that just as during the Vietnam War naysaying pundits and politicians were not merely undermining popular support for the war, but giving our enemies hope that they could win by waiting for the American people to lose their will to continue the fight”(Boylan).
