In today’s society, we don’t pay near enough respects to our veterans especially our Vietnam veterans; which is why I chose to honor them by selecting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall created by Maya Lin and can be found in Chapter Two Page 81 in the Reality Through the Arts textbook. Maya Lin is an incredible artist. Hearing her speak only further helped me understand and appreciate her work. She puts so much of her heart and soul into her work and genuinely thinks through each aspect of each piece and how she can better express her thoughts through this art, so that these thoughts can be recognized better and more easily, as well as assumed and agreed with. I was also able to learn that she felt that drawings wouldn’t have been able to describe or interpret the idea for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, so she spent months at a time writing an essay of the description, and had originally designed the project for an assignment when she was an undergraduate at Yale University. When in the midst of creating it, she had the desire to not involve the politics of it, and wanted the piece to be…

Memorializing is something that has remained a significant piece of our lives, something we as a society have seen done since as long as we can remember. The need to commemorate events and people can be complex in the sense that there are various reasons to create monuments and memorials, whether it be to recognize accomplishments or show respect to deep sacrifice. No matter what the central reason to create a monument is, it's imperative that it remains meaningful. In order to create a meaningful and significant monument, there are multiple factors to first consider. It's necessary for a monument's purpose and significance to be thought of first, to ensure that the monument should even be built in the first place.…

Monuments are statues or areas that honor a deep sacrifice or a very important person in a country. A monument helps connect the present to the past by linking the two together; “I wanted to create a unity between the nation’s past and present.” (Lin) The creation of a monument should be considered only when a deep sacrifice has been made and the location, along with the price, is reasonable. A monument should be constructed when a deep sacrifice to the country has been made; “all the names of those missing and killed (57,000) must be part of the memorial;...”…

The Confederate Soldier statue was built on the grounds of the Loudoun County Courthouse, which was built in Leesburg, VA in 1758. It has been a part of Loudoun history since then; serving as a jail, courthouse, legislature, and executive office. The statue, erected in 1908, depicts a confederate soldier aiming a rifle. Its purpose was to “serve as a memorial to the many Rebel soldiers who died fighting for the cause in which they believed” (as stated by Loudoun.gov). In fact, the courthouse, even served as the site of a small skirmish between north and south soldiers.…

Monuments recognize people that helped in events that contribute to how the United States is today. Though they take a lot of time and effort, it is worth the recognition. Agencies should consider in memorializing an event or person by creating a monument because they are used to honor great achievement or pay respect to a deep sacrifice. Monuments of people may be unnatural landmarks but they honor great achievements made in the U.S. Some problems that people may face when it comes to sculptures of a person is that there may be no actual photographs of the person but the meaning behind it is still powerful.…

An organization must construct a memorial in such a way that effectively conveys the significance of the event or person, a job done well in document G. In this document, Maya Lin, the designer of the exalted Vietnam Veterans Memorial, discusses the details in conceptualizing a memorial that would “allow everyone to respond and remember.” (G) Lin accomplished this by using a simple yet striking design of all the known names of American soldiers who died in the Vietnam War. The memorial seems cut out of the earth, and on a black wall is simply scribed the names of those to be remembered. This is not only a cost-effective idea, but one that memorializes the Vietnam War veterans by providing “an interface, between our world and the quieter… a unity between the nation’s past and present.”…

A planned design is used to adequately create “a federal monument and national icon” (Source C). With the correct timing and material a memorial can inspire and honor the memory of an event or individual. If a design is “apolitical, harmonious with the site, and conciliatory” (Source G) it can depict a sense of respect. The design of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. conveys more than one may think.…
