In the early days of the Vietnam war, United states involvement was limited to training and assistance to the South Vietnamese to help them defeat the communist soldiers of North Vietnam. The Vietnam War was a military conflict fought between North Vietnam and South Vietnam. South Vietnam was supported by the United States and other anti-communist allies; whereas, the North Vietnamese were supported by their communist allies. The Viet Cong fought using a guerrilla style of war, ambushing in small troops and using the element of surprise. The Viet Cong soldiers came from both sides of Vietnam, but would fight for North Vietnam because of their communistic views. The communists had one advantage over the United States during the war, knowledge of the land that made it possible for the Viet Cong’s guerrilla warfare method, including ambushing enemy troops, setting traps in the forests, and hit and run tactics. The United States and South Vietnamese relied on their advanced air support; they dropped thousands of pounds of explosives and deadly chemicals over North Vietnam aiming for the communist troops hiding amongst the forests. For the duration of the Vietnam war, the North Vietnamese guerrilla warfare tactics kept up with and arguably defeated South Vietnam and the United States significantly advanced weaponry, artillery, and air support.
