Vietnam and Afghanistan
Martin Luther King explained that the war also caused the dehumanization of American people, as he said, “ What do the peasants think as we ally ourselves with the landlords and as we refuse to put any action into our many words concerning land reform? What do they think as we test out our latest weapons on them, just as the Germans tested out new medicine and new tortures in the concentration camps of Europe? Where are the roots of the independent Vietnam we claim to be building? Is it among these voiceless ones” (King, 1967)? He compared America’s strategies of war to the Holocaust to help the audience have a better visualization of what was going on in Vietnam. The Holocaust example illustrated how inhumane America’s actions were as well as demonstrated how inhumane Americans are for accepting such cruel behaviour; thus, this comparison gave Americans a chance to reflect upon the dehumanizing mentality of believing their enemy is less than humane that they themselves and their leaders possess.
Similarly, the invasion of Afghanistan was supposedly necessary because the Taliban, which was in control of Afghanistan, refused to turn Bin Laden over to US authorities; however, the Taliban refused to give up Osama Bin Laden because the US refused to provide proof of Osama’s involvement in terrorist attacks against America (CNN, 2001).
