The Vietminh, or Viet Minh, was an organization whose forces fought against the Japanese and French to gain Vietnamese independence. This group of people was communist-led but was primarily operated as a national organization (Encyclopedia). The organization was formed in China in May 1941 by Ho Chi Minh. The official Japanese name for the Vietminh is Viet Nam Doc Lap Dong Minh Hoi. In English, this mean, League for the Independence of Vietnam. Japan occupied French Indochina during WWII. Along with fighting the French, the Vietminh started to bicker with Japan. The Vietminh recruited over 600 Japanese soldiers who had been fighting against France until 1954. The Viet Minh also did everything in its power to make friends with the US, and cooperated with the US in the struggle against Japan (Emergence). The Democratic Republic of Vietnam was declared independent on September 2, 1945 by Ho Chi Minh, the founder of the Vietminh. Within just a few days, the Chinese arrived in Vietnam to supervise the Japanese army. Because the Chinese were there, this now meant the Democratic Republic of Vietnam was only a theory and they did not have control of any territory. The peace accords were created with the intent to end the Vietnam War. In the treaty, Vietnam was temporarily divided into South Vietnam and North Vietnam up until 1956 where an election would take place (Vietminh Take). North Vietnam was given independence on October 11, 1954. Ho Chi Minh, the founder of the Vietminh, was given the title of Prime Minister of North Vietnam. South Vietnam became controlled by a man named Ngo Dinh Diem. In 1956 the Geneva Accords promised to determine a national government for Vietnam to become a united country. Although, this treaty fell through. Neither the leader of South Vietnam or the United States government signed the treaty to unify North and South Vietnam. The U.S. proposed the “American Plan” which had the support of the United Kingdom and South Vietnam. This plan stated the Vietnam would become one whole country with elections supervised by the United Nations. This plan was rejected by the Soviet Union. With support from the Americans, a man named Bao Dai removed the former emperor and declared himself the president of the Republic of Vietnam. Because there was no real election that took place, the Vietminh rebelled and started to fight the government. This led to a war known as the Second Indochina War, most commonly known as the Vietnam
