Video Response: Now and Then Now and Then (1991) chronicles the story of four adolescent girls who became friends in their small hometown of Shelby, Indiana. In particular, the movie described the climactic events that defined the summer of 1970 for the girls. Each of the girls had her own quirks and unique aspects to her personality. The movie, which was narrated in a series of flashback scenes, demonstrated the power of group membership and the therapeutic healing that group therapy can provide. Though their common ages and residential proximity likely contributed to their formation, it was their compassion and empathy for each other that bonded them as a group. The four girls, despite their friendship and camaraderie for each other, did not share many similar personality characteristics. For example, Roberta was an intelligent but unconventional member of the group. She was the most tomboyish of the girls, and was not afraid of new challenges. His murder was an external development that contributed to the group’s development over the summer and solidified them into a cohesive unit with a common purpose. Each of the girls had internal struggles that modified the dynamics of the group. For example, Samantha struggled with her parents’ divorce and Roberta sought to come to accept and heal from her mother’s death. The group was deeply affected when they found out that “Crazy Pete”, an elderly man who roamed the cemetery alone, was actually the father of Johnny. The group learned a valuable lesson regarding the damage that preconceived stereotypes may inflict, and vowed that they would not make hasty judgments about individuals without knowing the true
