Celta Assignment 2 Video Review Questions

The whole video had an impact on me, but the four things teachers do when children can’t answer questions had the biggest impact on me. The first one was telling the child to look at the question. The second was the teacher offering a reward if they answered. Something being taken away was the third thing, and blaming the victim was the fourth. I work at a daycare and may have done these things before, but seeing them on the video really made it clear that the tactics are ineffective. If a child doesn’t know the answer, none of those things will work. Also, blaming that particular child will not encourage them to participate.
I could use the video to show what individuals with learning disabilities go through. In the video it was staff members and parents participating, and they were struggling with the activities. One activity in the video dealt with reading and decoding. The activity had words mixed up on a paper and the participants had to figure out what the sentences were. After the activity you could tell the participants were exhausted. This shows that all of the energy goes into decoding the material, and the child may not actually be understanding the material. The instructor said that he had a girl in class who was always afraid of getting called on, so this distracted her from listening. He told her that if he was not standing in front of her, he wouldn’t call on her. And if he was standing in front of her, he was going to call on her. This allowed the girl to focus on listening instead of just worrying about being called on. When he would ask her a question, she would know the answer. She finally started to raise her hand, when he wasn’t standing directly in front of
