Video modeling is an evidence-based practice that teaches an individual through watching a video of the target behavior or skill. Video modeling is associated with the learning theory, which stated that individuals can learn through observation (McCoy & Hermansen, 2007). Through video modeling, the learner is able to “memorize, imitate, and generalize or adapt” (McCoy & Hermansen, 2007) the target behavior or skill being displayed. Research on video modeling as an intervention for individuals with autism has been found to serve as an effective was to teach a multiplicity of skills or behaviors. “Research suggests that persons with autism show to have a strong ability to process visual stimuli” (McCoy & Hermansen, 2007). There are four types of video modeling: “basic video modeling, video self, modeling, point-of-view modeling and video prompting” (ASD, National Professional Development Center on, 2010). In our agency video modeling is not an intervention we use during our sessions with clients, nor have I witnessed the use of the intervention in a classroom. However, after learning more about the intervention my opinion of “it seems outdated” due to the term, video which sends the image of a VCR to my mind, I am interested in trying video modeling with a few of my clients who rely on visuals. Video modeling is rather easy and quick to do. In a short amount of time, I was able to prepare a recording of basic video modeling on washing hands. I now can take that video anywhere and have my clients watch the video during the time of hand washing. I feel that also with video modeling it will be beneficial for my clients with generalizing the skill across environments since I would have the video easily accessible if needed to refer back
