Video Games Have a Negative Impact on Adolescent Behavior

“I’ve been waiting to do this for years”, says Chris Harper in a online group chat the night before he commenced the massacre that would leave 10 people dead and many more injured on the Umpqua Campus. Chris was known for spending most of his time playing and obsessing over violent video games, I which is the leading cause of the shooting. Chris is not the only example In which the mind was overcome by violent thoughts due to violent video games, as many others have been affected with the addiction and obsession. Mental health is not the only thing damaged when you play violent video games, as your health and performance in school is affected (CharismaNews).

August 16th 2013 a 8-year-old Louisiana boy intentionally shot and killed his grandmother after playing a violent video game. The boy was playing a video game on the Play Station III 'Grand Theft Auto IV, ' a realistic game that has been known for encouraging violence and awards points to players for killing people, just minutes before the killing occurred (CNN).. The association of violent video games with children is impairing their ability to tell the difference between reality and fantasy. A study done from the National Institute of Mental Health explains how the brain in children of adolescents up until adulthood are still growing and are easily moldable. Young adults and children at this age are close to their peak of physical health, strength, and mental capacity, but, for some, this can be a disastrous age mentally. Death rates linger anywhere between early and late adolescence. Rates of death by injury between ages 15 to 19 are about six times that of the rate between ages 10 and 14. Chris Staniforth, 20, died from a blood clot after spending up to 12 hours at a time playing on his Xbox. Chris suffered a blockage to his lungs when he developed deep vein thrombosis (Daily Mail). Violent Video games can give you seizures. Photosensitive epilepsy is more common in children and adolescents, television screens or computer monitors due to the flicker or rolling images. Certain video games such as violent video games contain rapid flashes or alternating patterns of different colors.Intense strobe lights like visual fire alarms trigger people to have seizures. These seizures can seriously harm your brain in that areas that control breathing in which is now one of the reasons for death in epilepsy (Science Daily). Another physical issue caused by video games is carpal tunnel syndrome. This physical injury is caused by repetitive movements in some cases associated with playing video games frequently and for long periods of time. Video Games have been known to harm your vision.
