Video games have existed since the late 1950s, but they only became a part of modern culture in the1980s. Since then, games have underwent huge changes, yet they still face the same troubles as they did back in the day. There is this idea that playing a video game, particularly a violent one, makes you violent. There are many other claims that video games produce effects on the human mind, such a detachment to reality, or the tendency to commit crimes, even nonviolent ones. However, video games do not produce adverse effects for the ordinary persons psyche, instead it is a medium in which you can find friends or even earn a living. Many will write that it causes aggression, and many have write that it does not. Studies that look past aggression, and instead upon various mental effects deserve mentioning. An article was written by Christopher Ferguson, a psychologist professor from Stetson University. His research on violent video games had an unexpected result. He found no support that violent video games lead to aggressive behavior. Indeed he even found that they had a positive effect, as they improved visuospatial cognition. It is not all positive however, especially when you consider that not everyone can tell the difference between fantasy and reality. Some people will see a violent action in a video game and believe it is acceptable to do in person. One such person went by the name of Zachary Burgess.
