What is a game? “A physical or mental competition conducted according to rules with the participants in direct opposition to each other,” is the definition of a game by Merriam-Webster. (Game) Games have been around since humans have walked this earth. Violent games have been played for a very long time too. Romans had gladiatorial games. The most popular game in the world today is soccer. In America, American football is the best-known game that most Americans watch. Like football, Video games have been around for a couple of decades. While the video game industry has had its ups and downs, video games are continuing to stay the entertainment of choice for many people. Video games industry has had many different controversies about how video games affect society. People believe that violent video games turn people into killers. National Rifle Association’s Vice President Wayne LaPierre said, “Guns don’t kill people. Video games, the media, and Obama’s budget kills people.” (Kain) While many people believe violent video games are unhealthy for society, violent video …show more content…
Researchers found that twenty minutes of violent video game gameplay can desensitize gamers. A reduce in emotional response to real violence is defined as desensitize by researchers. American children will see 16,000 murders and 220,000 acts of violence from video games, movies, and television series, by the age of 18. This claim is supported by many but fails to admit several facts. Children can differentiate the difference between violence in the real world and violence on the screen, by the age of seven, which is what studies have found. Children use the fantasy violence and learn from it. The knowledge children learn from violent video games are used when a real life scenarios occur to help deal with the situation.
