Imagine that, for an experiment, 200 children would be gathered for testing and be exposed to two kinds of violent content: watching their parents brutally attack each other for an hour each day, or watching a violent television program for an hour each day. After a month, the mental health of the two groups of children would be assessed and the results compared; hypothetically, it would be clear that the two groups would be affected very differently. Even children can determine the difference between real violence and fictional violence, whether on the television or in a video game. No matter how violent the video game, video games do not cause violent behavior in adolescents. Despite common belief, video games do not cause aggression; in …show more content…
First of all, the rate of arrests for violent juvenile crimes fell nearly fifty percent between 1995 and 2008, while the sales of video games have quadrupled in that time (“Do Violent Videogames Contribute to Youth Violence”).If video games were truly responsible for driving teenagers to violence, then the crime rate would have increased to match the games’ growing popularity. However, the rate has steadily declined, which proves that graphic video games have not negatively influenced teenagers. Furthermore, in a report by the United States Secret Service in 2004, only one eighth of individuals responsible for mass school shootings expressed an interest in violent video games (“Do Violent Videogames Contribute to Youth Violence”). This means that less than thirteen percent of the perpetrators could have their violence attributed to an avid interest or participation in violent video games. While the media is quick to jump to video games as the source of their horrible, destructive behavior, it is statistically proven that it is very rarely the true cause. It is statistically proven that video games do not cause criminal activity, but rather that their aggressive behaviors stem from other …show more content…
For starters, minors who already display aggressive tendencies are shown to be interested in and drawn towards violent games (“Do Violent Videogames Contribute to Youth Violence”). They feel a need to play violent video games because of their anger and aggressive personality; the video games do not make them violent, rather, those who are violent enjoy violent games. This desire for more virtual violence occasionally leads to their behavior escalating, however this is not always the case. When surveyed, sixty-two percent of boys said that they played video games because it “helps [them] relax” (“Do Violent Videogames Contribute to Youth Violence”). In this way, video games can be beneficial to minors. Video games can offer a safe outlet for their negative feelings without causing real-world harm to those who struggle with anger or violent urges. Also, a large majority of mass murderers were found to be involved in substance abuse, bullying, and generally displayed antisocial personality traits (“Offender and Offense Characteristics”). The adverse effects from violent media on youth have long vexed the American public. For decades, scholars studied the impact that TV and film violence had on children, and concluded that high exposure to televised violence may lead to an increase in aggressive behaviors and desensitization (Eron, Huesmann, Lefkowitz, & Walder, 1972; Josephson, 1987; Huesmann, Moise-Titus, Podolski, & Eron, 2003). However, technological advancements in the video game industry changed the media landscape, and it was expected that video game violence would have similar, possibly greater, effects on youth as TV and film; thus, video games that stimulated aggressive attitudes, feelings, and behaviors in children were of specific concern. Video games have become…

There has been a study that has shown a “[strong connection] between violent video games and juvenile offenders” ("Violent Video Games Are a Risk”). Videogames often portray the “killing of people or animals [and] the use and abuse of drugs” (Jenkins) and are reflective of today’s society. This is often the case in an average day of a young gamer, which points to the evidence that violent video games do not have an effect on violent crimes. While this may be true, it should be acknowledged that there is no agreement amidst criminologists about the cause for decrease of violent crime. In fact, they are led to believe that “it’s probably a combination of factors.” (Dashevsky) Despite this, we need to accept that violent crimes have been dropping ever since violent video games were…

Intro: For years the media has expressed that the root of extreme school shootings, violent stabbings, and brutal mass murder is violent media. However, violent media does not correlate with the violent crime rate or the murder rate. In fact, the FBI’s violent crime statistics have dropped by 50% from 1992 to 2011, and the murder rate decreased by 54% from the same years. Notice that violent video games have been around since the late eighties and have only been increasing in violent and realistic content since then. It is very clear, violent media has little to no correlation with violent crimes.…

Video Games Do Not Make the Player More Violent Violent video games do not affect people in negative ways. Recently many people have been doing tests to see if video games are making people, mainly teenagers, act out in more violent ways. When video games affect one’s behavior, it is called “priming”. Although video games have become more violent over the years, video games do not make teenagers act out more cruelty because data collected from tests show no change, some psychologists believe it actually reduces poor decisions, and today almost all young males are playing video games yet they are not all acting out. Several tests have been done to see if brutal content in video games affect the player negatively, but no data has been found…

While playing the game, kids have the time of their life enjoying all the graphic content the game provides. Although violent videogames do expose adolescents to graphic content, that does not mean the viewer will become violent themselves. Videogames should not be the scapegoat for when teen violence occurs. The problem that people are facing is that they are making quick assumptions that since teens are exposed to videogames then they are going to be shooters. In the article, “Violent Video Games Do Not Cause Aggression”, David Kushner explains, “If no one has said there’s a causal link between games and real-life violence, why does it keep making headlines, and why do these get cited so much?”…

Time after time, when a horrific shooting occurs, video games are often accused of being a key factor in motivating the perpetrators of the crime. Shootings such as; Columbine, Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, and Aurora are just a handful the media has targeted as being related to video games. While the shooters can be connected to being players of video games, that shouldn't necessarily mean that the video games are a significant factor in their violent actions. Correlation is definitely not causation and there is just not the scientific evidence to back up these claims. However, there has been a substantial amount of research that exhibit video games are not a primary factor to violent behavior and that they can actually have positive benefits…

Video Games Do Not Cause Violent Behavior Over the years there have been several incidents that have stirred up the emotions of people, parents and especially investigators. These incidents include the Sandy Hook Elementary Shooting, the Columbine Massacre, and the incident in Colorado where a man went on a shooting spree in an Aurora movie theater. There was one key thing that aroused people’s emotions connected by investigators to all three incidents: video games. This led to the belief that if the parents’ children play violent video games that the child will become violent. Even though people have been led to believe that video games cause people to become cruel and commit violent actions, video games do not cause people to commit acts of violence because they don 't have time to…

Parents need to become more knowledgeable of content and exert greater supervision over the games their children are playing. In a study performed by Woodard and Gridina, they stated that, “While most parents (88%) report regularly supervising their children’s use of television, only about half (48%) report regularly supervising their children’s use of video games” (Woodard & Gridina). Why are parents worried about the programs that are on television more than the content in video games? Have parents become desensitized to the content of the video games which causes little worry of long term effects? With hundreds of theories that state why youth gun violence has become a major problem, it is hard to simply explain the correct answer.…
