They learn how to accept losing and winning, how to be respectful, and the student ends up learning about the subject. Playing games is about being a good sport, respectful of others achievements or losses. Many kids get irritated when losing and are not very good sports. Games let teachers teach the polite way of reacting when losing. “Play is useful because it simulates real life experience — physical, emotional, and/or intellectual — in a safe, iterative and social environment”(Jordan Shapiro). When students get bored, they zone or do not pay attention to anything the teacher is saying. Staring at a white board while a teacher writes down numbers or letters is not always the best way of learning for some students. They do not retain any information. With games, students are interactive and and are always thinking about how to answer the questions and thinking about strategies on how to win. When kids play educational video games, they are engaged thinking and learning. Also, playing video games in class is very useful when it comes to teaching little kids. Little kids have an attention span of a fly and when they get bored they will talk and run around. With video games, the kids are learning, having fun, and are engaged in what they are doing. “For the practice to be meaningful, students must be engaged (and let’s be honest, countless workbook pages or textbook exercises are not always highly engaging)” (Education World).
