There is an abundant of those who feel video games are a complete waste of time. There are some benefits to those who do play video games such as hand eye coordination. One needs to move past some of stereotypes that those who play video games only play them and never get outside to play and exercise. Hand eye coordination is critical to many fields of today’s high tech world. Surgeons rely on excellent hand eye coordination to preform laparoscopic surgery.

In fact Sadandanan, Dryfhout, & Sosnowski, (2008), noted that the performance of laparoscopy requires certain basic skills, including ambidexterity, hand–eye coordination, and depth perception. Through the use of specific instruments, physicians can perform specific operative skills, such as dissection, cutting, suturing, and removal of various organs (p. 68). This highly trained skill set could be honed to some degree by playing certain fast paced video games and could be a fantastic argument for a child to present to his or her parents to justify the purchase of a video game console. It would be fairly incredible if a parent listened to his or her 10 year old argue that they needed to hone his or her hand eye coordination to become a surgeon and handed the parent an ad for an Xbox One gaming console.
