In the last few decades, with the rapid availability of the Internet and world-wide online games network, video games popularity has been growing tremendously. According to research by the Entertainment Software Association, in 2015, 155 million American play video games, which is almost half of the population. Video games have been said to be the cause of many problems in teens: bad academic result, aggressive behavior, strain relationship with friends and family… Therefore, in the past, “Parents tend to approach video games like junk food: games are fine in moderation but ultimately they are an evil temptation that’s more bad than good” (Forbes). However, people can’t deny that video games also have positive effects including abstract and high level thinking, enhance mental skills that sometimes are not even taught at school like: planning, resources management, multitasking, quick thinking, making fast analysis, decisions, mapping, memory… Some console video game even help with enhancing physical health. Because of all of the positives effects of video games accompanied by its incredible growth, many people start to refer to video games as sports, e-Sport. …show more content…
However, classifying video games as sports brought up controversy. Is it really a sport? Sports, usually, provides people, who play them, with fitness and good physical and mental health. So, does playing video games providing players with the same thing? Is it healthy? And most importantly, should parents and the society encourage teenagers to play video games like how they encourage their kids to play sports? Or, should it be included in schools activities just as sports? In my opinion, playing video games is absolutely a sports for 2 main reasons: playing video games and sports share same characteristics and playing video games also provide player with mental health and sometimes physical
