How Do Video Games Affect Teenagers?

Over the past decade, I have personally seen and experienced the development of video games advance at an amazing rate. With something that is improving at a high rate only means that it is popular, Shaffer (2006) tells us that the number of people who own computers and gaming consoles have increased which also means people who play video games could have only increased as well. With the researches I have done, I see that there are many who think that video games have the potential to boost a teengaer’s education and even further more. For the purpose of this paper, a person between the ages of thirteen to nineteen will be considered as teenager.

A study conducted at both Beth Israel Medical Center in New and Washington University (cited by Barclay 2009) had found that the surgeons who played video games had faster reaction times by 100 milliseconds, which may sound very little but in action, it is noticeable. One surgeon, named Dr. Rosser enjoyed the games and agreed that playing video games do help and said "I use the same hand-eye coordination to play video games as I use for surgery" he also said "This is a nice, wholesome game. No blood and guts. But I need the same kind of skill to go into a body and sew two pieces of intestine together" while playing Super Monkey Ball. Stereotypically, gamers are seen as lone teenagers sitting in a dark room on their computer or gaming consoles, but with most popular games being multiplayer online, it is where countless amount of people gather to play together. Playing games like Lineage gives the player the experience where I can be an international financier, buying and selling items at different parts of the virtual world. People who play Deus Ex can experience life as a government special agent, where political violence and terrorism can be questioned. The Sims Online allows the player to experience many real life situation like running up for president in a virtual city with real people playing as citizens, this games allows one to go through things like muckraking, accusations of voter fraud, and political jockeying. Another game called Civilization allows the player to organize oneself around a goal and develop skills, habits, and understanding. On Apolyton.net (a website which is devoted to the Civilization), many players go on to post new feeds, discussion board, share screenshots of their achievements in the game.
