The Relationship Between Violent Video Games And Aggression

Ever since Mortal Kombat first came out in the mid-nineties, video game violence has become a lingering conversation; especially when a senseless act of violence occurs in the real world. There have been many studies out there to determine if there is a link between video game violence and if it is the cause of many real world tragedies. The American Psychological Association released a report in August of 2015, that stated there is a “link between playing violent video games and aggression” although it goes on to say that there is still not enough research to conclude whether it leads to criminal violence (“Technical Report”, 2015). Although they point out in the text that “aggression” does not necessarily mean “violence” (“Technical Report, 2015). This type of publication allows the media to make blanket statements about the connections and essentially place any blame upon the medium as opposed to the persons responsible for such heinous acts. Although, modern video games have made it even more difficult to discern with the …show more content…
The experiment design would have “participants make a moral choice in a video game and then measured their behavior on two subsequent tasks” (Ellithorpe et al., 2015). The first task would be either a “noise retaliation” or a “reward retaliation” exercise where they would either gauge their reaction times after a loud blast of noise or they were told that if they shoot faster than another person they would get money (Ellithorpe et al., 2015). The other task would be a random drawing for a gift card where they asked the participants if they would donate some of their winnings to charity (Ellithorpe et al.,

With games like Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty becoming some of the best selling series in the video game industry; selling around over 250 million copies, (McWhertor, 2016; United States Security and Exchange Commission, 2016) people wonder how much impact video games have on in our society and how much influence they have on our behavior. A controversial topic that arose in 2005 in the American Psychological Association is whether or not violent video games leads to increased and more severe violent behaviors (American Psychological Association, 2005). We understand that one form of developing behavior is by observing the consequences of people’s actions. (Bandura, 1963).…

Video Games and Violence “Violent Video Games: Rehearsing Aggression”, is an article in The Chronicle of Higher Education written by Elizabeth Carll explaining that violent video games play an important factor on violence. The article is a response to Christopher Fergusen, an advocate for violent video games, who previously made the article “Video Games: the Latest Scapegoat for Violence”. She focuses on the body of research available to show that violent video games cause violent behavior and goes on to say that limiting access will only allow the parents to control what media their kids have. However, Carll acknowledges that not everyone that plays these games will become violent. She writes, “Obviously, not all people who play video games…

In an article published by TIME an Associate Professor and Chair of Psychology at Stetson University, Christopher Ferguson, weighs in on how poorly research has been done, “Quite simply the research just hasn’t panned out… it has been increasingly recognized that much of the early research on violent video games linking them to increased aggression was problematic: most studies used outcome measures that had nothing to do with real-life aggression and failed to control carefully for other important variables such as family violence, mental health issues or even gender in many studies (boys play more violent video games and are more aggressive).” Another shot at how bad experiments “proving” that violent media leads to real world behavior was in a Supreme Court case, Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Association, where Edmund G. Brown was fighting to remove the restriction of the sale or rental of video games to minors in California. In this court case Brown completely destroyed Anderson’s experiments saying that the California nor any psychologists, including Anderson can provide any link between violence in video games and harm to minors. He went on to scrutinize how the experiments were done saying that the studies have been rejected by every court to consider them and that all experiments that “proved” violence in video games cause real world violence has been made purely on correlation and not causation, he then went on to show how flawed the methodology of the experiments were. Edmund G. Brown won his court case, overturning the Californian law that restricted sale and rental to a minor, with the United States Supreme Court ruling in a 7-2…

In the article Violent Video Games: Dogma, Fear and Pseudoscience, Christopher Ferguson discusses how poor or inaccurate research has led to a public misunderstanding of the effects of violent video games. In the article he discusses how much of the research, which has been misrepresented or disingenuous with its results or conclusions, has led to claims of negative effects which may be incorrect based on these issues. As part of this, I wanted to review how the people have viewed violent acts and attributed video games to their effect. Ferguson (2009) stated that after the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007 two individuals, Phil McGraw (Dr. Phil) and Jack Thompson, made claims to the public that the shooting was related to violent video games. I wanted to see if these points were made independent of the other factors associated the issues Ferguson was presenting.…

Parents must be aware of the video games’ rating and keep all dangerous games away from children. Outcomes from experiments have made a significant predictive relationship between violent video games and aggression, but nothing has proved to support a long-term relationship between violent video games and aggression. A video game debate must be made, and it should be positive. A debate on violent video games could be made, but unfortunately video games have become more widespread over past decades. Video games never have been the cause for violent behavior that led to criminal actions. Politicians have long been looking for an excuse as to the reason that many national tragedies happen such as many mass shootings. To blame these acts of violence on the sole act of playing video game would be just plain idiotic. Studies done have shown that while violent behavior has long been linked to aggression in children and teenagers, there has been no such evidence to link it to criminal behavior (Stifferlin). Politicians and ignorant people have used video games as a pretext for the actions of criminals who have caused nation wide tragedies.…

While playing the game, kids have the time of their life enjoying all the graphic content the game provides. Although violent videogames do expose adolescents to graphic content, that does not mean the viewer will become violent themselves. Videogames should not be the scapegoat for when teen violence occurs. The problem that people are facing is that they are making quick assumptions that since teens are exposed to videogames then they are going to be shooters. In the article, “Violent Video Games Do Not Cause Aggression”, David Kushner explains, “If no one has said there’s a causal link between games and real-life violence, why does it keep making headlines, and why do these get cited so much?”…

Video Games Do Not Cause Violent Behavior Over the years there have been several incidents that have stirred up the emotions of people, parents and especially investigators. These incidents include the Sandy Hook Elementary Shooting, the Columbine Massacre, and the incident in Colorado where a man went on a shooting spree in an Aurora movie theater. There was one key thing that aroused people’s emotions connected by investigators to all three incidents: video games. This led to the belief that if the parents’ children play violent video games that the child will become violent. Even though people have been led to believe that video games cause people to become cruel and commit violent actions, video games do not cause people to commit acts of violence because they don 't have time to…
