Our families are the foundation to how we are brought up as a child. Our parents are our role models, the ones we turn to for advice, and the ones who are supposed to nurture and care for us. In a perfect society, it would be ideal if children grow up with parents whom nurture, protect, and put their child at the forefront of every decision. Unfortunately, there are households where children are forced to care for themselves due to the abuse that happens under their own roof. In the music video “Runaway Love,” Ludacris and Mary J. The entire video uses dark lighting to illustrate the somber mood. In the ending of each verse the girls are packing their bags to leave, and the camera shows them looking back. This scene is a symbol of the girls looking at their past and what they are leaving behind. Although it is hard to leave their parents and their home, they are going to a place where they do not have to deal with the abuse any longer. The three characters in the music video are symbols as well. They are symbols of every girl in the world that is being abused. The girls represent innocence and purity. The symbol that holds extreme importance in the music video is the candles being held in the last scene. There is a large group of girls, young and old, gathered around in a circle holding candles as Mary J. Blige sings in the middle. The girls and women holding the candles represent those in previous abusive relationships or households as well as those that continue to be abused. They hold the light as a symbol of hope that there will not be any girls that are in abusive households, as well as hope that those still dealing with abuse will be free. Some parents find smacking to be okay as a discipline for their child, however it can turn into a form of abuse. Ludacris and Mary J. Blige perform their music video “Runaway Love” in a way that depicts the hardships that children undergo in abusive households. Their music video is a way to reach out to those being abused to say there are others out in the world like them. The video serves as a public service announcement as well, “Knowing more about rates of abuse is important for developing long- term child protection policies and effective services for children and families” (Prevalence of Childhood Abuse 52). When we are more aware of real life problems, there is more of a chance to stand up and make a change. Music videos are ways of getting a message of happiness, hope, frustration, or awareness out to the community. The important characters, language, and symbols that directors and artists use in music videos all plays a part in the overall message of their song. In “Runaway Love” Ludacris and Mary J. Blige use the personal stories of three children to introduce different kinds of abuse to the viewer along with a sense of hope that the abuse will stop
