The North Texas Food Bank (NTFB) is a nonprofit organization with a mission to end hunger in North Texas. As part of Feeding America, a nationwide food bank network, the NTFB accomplishes this mission through over 250 Partner Agencies at more than 1,000 locations across 13 counties. Several departments are responsible for coordinating the variety of programs and services that contribute to NTFB mission. Every program or service involves connecting low income North Texans to nutritious food, while collecting recipient information (North Texas Food Bank [NTFB], n.d.). Discussing the specific characteristics of NTFB clients, services, program coordination, and first hand volunteer experience provides a detailed overview of this valuable organization.…
Individually and coorpaterly we were able to sort a total of 13,109 pounds of food and provided 8,400 meals. We were able to prepare donations for distribution to over 600 non-profit agencies in metro Atlanta and North Georgia area. I worked together with other volunteers in order to sort, inspect and pack quality groceries. Being part of the community I believe that is is essential for one to become more aware of how serious the food issue is in Atlanta inner cities. I have a better thankfulness of everyone who is involved with the Atlanta food bank because they…
The video Child Welfare Choice a caseworker realist job preview seemed to be more appealing for those who may take an interest in this position. It was amazing that those people who spoke in the video mainly spoke about the importance of the job. This video illustrated major points that seemed to mainly focus on serving children. It was also amazing that they were able to point out the significance of giving a family the materials they needed to succeed. It was important that they did include stories and actually illustrated by reenactment what the issues and confrontations the job includes.…
When I first learned about osteopathic medicine I was attracted to the idea of the holistic approach of working with the patient to treat the whole body and not just the disease. This osteopathic philosophy is supplemented with what I had learned during my time as a Public Health student where the focused was on heath education with an emphasis on preventative medicine to help the individual and community. I came to this realization when I was observing an osteopathic family medicine physician interacting with a diabetic patient that was non-compliant with his medication that came in for a cut on his calf that was not healing properly. The physician proceeded to explain how by not taking his diabetic medication, affected his calf from healing…
Weath brings out the good of people. First I think it's good because people get lots of money because they have so much money and they donate or give to charities or people. Jr smith is a basketball player he donated 30,000 dollars to a charity. Some people just help and just where the color of the charity or some times run marathons to donate. In October some sports where pink for breast cancer.…
We were being questioned so much that it made me realize that not many people help them out. One lady I encountered told me to make sure we had enough care packages left to give to others. Her response filled my heart with happiness because no matter her struggle, she wanted to make sure others were happy. That day we were able to help 10 people and that is only the beginning of making a…
America has made a lot of changes in the past on becoming more inventive, resourceful, and as well as industrialized. Due to the variations in how our food industries operate, small family-owned farms have rapidly vanished leaving us with large, industrialized productions that mass produce for the benefit of the Large Corporations. Americans expect to be able to have large quantities of food available for purchase at anytime and at a low price. Unfortunately in order to get that food to us at low prices, we have to sacrifice aspects of animal rights, human rights, the environment, and health.…
Our morning at feed my starving children was pretty overwhelming at first. There was a large group of volunteers. I have volunteered at feed my starving children several times, but this was the largest group I have ever been in. At the beginning of the session they explain the packing process and the different types of meals that they send. We had the unique opportunity to pack the Potato-W which is made for…
I agree with Michael that the “Poor Kids” documentary was tough to watch. Seeing the different types of impoverished living situations that people in the documentary were in was both humbling and frustrating. It was humbling in the sense that it gave me a far greater appreciation for the basic amenities and gifts that I was afforded during my childhood. I never even came remotely close to having my family struggle to survive, and for that I’m forever grateful. The documentary is especially frustrating because its subjects are right here in the United States.…
The poor in American Society are the victims of the social theory referred to as CONFLICT THEORY. The theory explains that the social STRATIFICTION SYSTEM is not functioning properly and the rich benefit more from the governmental decisions at the expense of the disadvantaged, those who rightly need the assistance. This theory is shockingly apparent in the Frontline documentary “Poor Kids”. This film follows the lives of three families’ struggling to deal with life’s most crippling situations the best way they can. The film demonstrates that being poor is not always a question of a PERSONAL PROBLEM related to the ABUSE of drugs or alcohol, but of a SOCIAL PROBLEM with unemployment, lack of job opportunities, and in this particular film, recession.…
“With great power comes great responsibility” being the oldest of nine I have an abundance of both responsibility and expectations to uphold. One thing that was stressed was the importance of giving back to those that come after me. Over the last three years I have done many things that help those around and in my community. One of the most recent events was during the summer during “Gospel Music Workshop of America”. The next event occurred after that was also in the summer in Brooklyn.…
I asked myself the question “how can we make a long-term effect on a short-term mission trip?” This idea centered around the lessons we were teaching the children throughout the day. I noticed that the children we well informed about God and how to become a Christian. Pastor Vernon gives them lessons every week, probably the same lessons we were giving them. The children were hungry for more than a preschool version of the bible.…
As I member of my youth choir, I worked to organize charity outings such as singing and praying for the homeless at Pacific Garden Mission. As we performed, I loved seeing the smiles that light upon the faces of individuals living in the…
An individual’s growth is characterized by various developmental categories including physical appearance, regulation of emotions, cognitive and language abilities. Often the development is thought to be differentiated by the numerous cultures globally yet in the documentary Babies directed by Thomas Balmès illustrates the similarities among all four countries he documents. As one infant (Ponijao) is from Namibia his culture is largely different in comparison to the baby (Hatti) from the United States of America. However, although the socialization differs immensely, the documentary illustrates the similar timeline that all four babies develop (Chabat & Balmès, 2010). Physically it becomes evident of similarities in growth patterns, and the advancement of motor skills.…
Give a man a fish, he eats for the night, teach a man how to fish and he eats forever. Earth is home to 7.4 billion people -- of those 7.4 billion people more than 3 billion people live on less than $2.50 a day (UNDP). More than 1.3 billion people live on $1.25 a day; or in other words, extreme poverty (UNDP). Poverty is a worldwide hurdle that nobody has yet to knockdown. Poverty, Inc. is a film that shows the untold impacts of foreign aid; moreover, how America, NGO’s (non-governmental organization) and the United Nations are hindering/crippling those they provide aid for; such as, clothes, food, etc.…
