Video Analysis: Everyone Rides The Carousel

Improved Essays
The video "Everyone Rides the Carousel" is very helpful because it explains and illustrates Erikson's eight psychosocial stages of development through a unique metaphor. It talks about the first stage of life as being trust vs. mistrust. Page 43 of the text explains that this stage is where the individual (infant) puts so much trust on the people closest to him that when not comforted when needed, they develop a sense of mistrust. An example of of the trust is shown in the video where the baby begins crying and the mother comforts him, resulting in the baby not crying anymore and being satisfied. Another scenario is shown where the baby begins crying and at first no one picks him up to comfort him because there is no one in the room, and although …show more content…
Table 2.2 (page 42) of the text, explains that during this stage, children compare their social and academic skills to those of their peers. If the child fails to obtain thoses same skills that he observes in his peers, that is when the feeling of inferiority becomes active. In the video, it is shown that the little boy feels inferior because his classmates know how to read much more efficiently than he can, and he also feels inferior in woodworking class because he cannot accomplish to built something and he is unable to complete the things his teacher can.

Ride five named "The Challenge of Adolescence" is the stage of Identity versus role confusion which takes place between the years 12 and 20. In the video, one of the girls goes through a "house of mirrors" where she pictures herself having different roles, the role of a queen, the role of an engineer, the role of a stay-at-home mother, etc. These roles she sees herself playing is her attempting to form an identity of herself but confusing roles and who she wants to be in the

During this stage, adults are to work and raise their families, look after younger people (whether it is their children or grandchildren). The individuals who are at this stage in their lives and do not follow through with their responsabilities tend to feel stagnant or self-centered, as described in the text. These characteristics/circumstances are seen in the video when the couple is arguing about having another baby. The man says he wants to have another child, yet he does not really take in cosideration that his wife is sick and perhaps it is not the right time to talk about having another child, the man is being a bit self-centered. This is also shown when the man decides he does not want to talk about the subject anymore, he does not care about being on the responsability that he should be on good terms with his partner, but at the moment he is only caring about his own

Secure infants seek proximity with their caregivers, especially after periods of separation, and in the presence of their caregivers infants display more exploratory behaviours (Bowlby, 1969/1982). Infants with an insecure-avoidant attachment rarely seek interaction with caregiver and do not appear distressed when their caregiver leaves. Insecure-ambivalent infants become distressed when separated from their caregiver, once the caregiver returns the distress is not resolved. These infants may be more passive or aggressive than those in other groups. Main and Solomon (1986) later introduced a fourth group: disorganized/disoriented (D).…

According to Erikson, the first 18 months of life is a time when infants develop senses of trust or mistrust based off of how well their needs are met (Feldman, R.S., 2015, p. 142). The infant observed seemed to be happy and had great trust in her caregiver, but this can be disproven by the fact the observer never saw the child removed from the adult. This is a reason why secure attachment cannot be concluded with this…

Parents around the world have their opinions on how children should be raised and what is best for them, however, it is scientifically proven that the life stages Erik Erikson theorized has proven true to some degree, especially for me personally. He explains that there are eight life phases every child, adolescent, and adult go through, whether he or she is aware of it or not. I was impacted between the ages of 13 and 19 years old. Mentally, physically, and emotionally I grew up to who I am today. I have looked at older people, watched them make mistakes, told myself to be different, and I have strived for that ever since.…

Erikson’s initial stage, Trust vs. Mistrust, approximately begin to happen from birth to one year. Erikson thought that an infant whose immediate needs are met, such as being comforted when comfort is needed by the infants will develop trust. He also said that in order to learn to discriminate between people who are honest and dishonest, mistrust is necessary. At this stage, should it happen that mistrust prevails over trust, the child will be withdrawn, suspious and will be devoid of self-belief (Sharkey, May 1997).…

Although in Psychology, the term is used in reference to the relationship between an infant and its parents or caregiver, households would describe the term as how the infant or toddler reacts when its parents have left the room and how it is comforted, whether it is self-comfort or it cries until its parents return. Van Der Kolk thoroughly defined the topic while providing real life scenarios or instances to allow his readers to better grasp the topic. His discussion allowed my mind to wonder and caused me to think of things in reference to how would the things he discussed in his book, would differ from then until now. I feel that this point could open up more doors as far as research because I, myself, would like to know exactly the percentage of children that have behavior issues that are because they do not have any form of attachment to their parents. I know that the topic has more than likely been researched before but in today’s society I feel that it would be an interesting study because not only do children act out but they have the tendency to use other things to self soothe such as social media, electronic devices and in some cases, drugs.…
