Video Analysis: Circular Reasoning

Improved Essays
I try to steer clear of anything that I know is going to get me confused.
I am the type of person that likes things told to me straight. I do not like confusion and I hate it when I have to walk away from something because I cannot figure it out or do not completely understand. When talking about paradoxes this week, I knew there would be a point where I get fed up and annoyed, and I was correct. The video was very fascinating to me once I understood it after watching it a few times, as well as conducting some of my own research.
In the video it mentioned circular reasoning. Circular reasoning is a type of reasoning that is supported by a premise, which is supported by a proposition. To me it sounded a bit confusing but after reading some

In the video, “‪Eye of the Storm Featuring Jane Elliott Training Video or DVD TrainingABC‬,” Jane Elliot explains how a blue-eyed is more superior to anyone who has brown eyes. She goes on to say that “the blue-eyed people will get 5 more minutes of recess and the brown-eyed people with have to use a cup to drink from the fountain” (TrainingABC, 2013). Even though I believe Elliot thought this would work in all generations, I don’t agree with that at all. Parents should not allow their children to go through with this because it could cause discrimination based on eye color and it can cause them hurt in the long run. In this video, Elliot discussed how a certain eye color means that you are better than another.…

In the CNN article, The meaning of tolerance in the Trump era, anti-Trump, journalist, Isaac Bailey, advises readers on how those who did not vote for Trump’s “bigotry and misogyny” should handle their relationships with people that did. The author uses a C-Span video with an admittedly prejudiced veteran and a situation involving religion and homosexuality on the Ellen Degeneres Show, to help define when, “it makes sense to be tolerant of opposing views”, and when, “it is appropriate to separate yourself from potentially soul-sapping relationships”. The C-Span video he writes about of a disabled veteran admitting the wrongfulness of his racial prejudice and asking how he can overcome it, as an example in which one should tolerate someone’s…

In my honest opinion, I find all of Robert Cialdini’s non-rational norms, to be much simpler than I expected, but they are also much more significant than I was expecting as well. I also didn’t realize how often they would all come in to play into everyday life. This concept is very interesting to me, but I can also see how people could be very torn as to if these matters were rational or non-rational. When it comes to reciprocity, I feel the biggest reason this is non-rational is because it just simply isn’t fair. Some people are more capable of doing for others, and for someone to be able to use that as manipulation towards someone less fortunate is morally wrong to me.…

Situation 7: At the beginning the author described a scenario in which a women would rather stand all the way to the union station than take the seat next to a man. The woman was in fear but the author didn’t explicit what she was afraid of. I guess she was afraid of African American males because the video shows the picture of another African American seating next to an unoccupied seat. Even though there is someone who would fill up the space by seating to the man, the meaning of the space still exists. The space will always follow the man and the forsaken colored people.…

    Video Analysis: Ted Talk

    1. Before watching this Ted Talk video, I did think I was a some what, decent listener. I believed this because during conversations, I always liked to truly understand what the other person is trying to communicate to me before I answer back or giving a reply -- which led me to believing I was a good listener. After watching it, I realized, and also am surprised, that my listening skills do need some revamping because I know I do not ever take some time to sit in silence and would never think this is a way to better your listening skills. I believe my listening skills impact my communication skills because many times I focus too much on how a message is being sent (tone) vs. what the message being sent is trying to communicate.…

As I watched the video, thoughts of astonishment and pride ran through my head. The video protrayed a nine year old school boy called Ezra Frech using sport to overcome his disability and having a mature and positive state of mind about his disability. Initially, I felt terribly due to the fact that I branded disabled people as inferior. As the video came to an end, Ezra left an impact on me saying that his disability led him to build confidence and to be strong.…

Have you ever heard that saying ”Believe only half of what you see and nothing that you hear.” Well, I don’t believe anything anyone says anymore. I use to enjoy reading about politics and this year has been the most disappointing with the news media, newspapers, and so on, not with just our leaders or may I say “so-called leaders” but the news as well. No, not all news is accurate you would be fooling yourself if you have said yes.…

I find the truth section really interesting. While I was acting in Spamalot I never considered the different “truths” that were possible to portray. I thought that since I was in an imaginary scene that the ideas and truths of it were also imaginary. I never even considered that the audience could be saying things like “I don’t believe that he would react like that,” or “I wouldn’t react like that,” but after reading this I understand why it is completely necessary to understand the truths of the scene. As an actor I tend to use scenic truth in most of my characters.…

One must challenge their way of thinking, because the things we think we know can actually be misleading. Most people believe that they are great critical thinkers, and as great critical thinker they do research, to not be fooled by any information that is presented. What people are not aware of, is that the evidence that one seeks out can actually be misleading, because in most cases it only proves the initial beliefs that one already had. This occurs because human tend to be bias about information that goes against their beliefs, or because they just want to confirm their initial belief. In Gilovich’s book, How we know what it’s so, a book about the flaws of every day reasoning, encourages the reader’s to become skeptics, “To truly appreciate the complexities of the world and the intricacies of human experience, it is essential to understand how we can be misled by the apparent evidence of everyday experience.…
