Victoria Matus Case Study

Improved Essays
It is with great pleasure that I recommend Victoria Matus for her admission to college. She has been my chemistry student for two years. Victoria is curious and fearless scientifically, and is undaunted by topics that are difficult or about which she is initially uncertain. She approaches chemistry with maturity; she knows how to ask good and perceptive questions, and she knows where to go to start getting answers, whether they are found in the literature or they are obtained from her peers and/or teacher. I am most impressed by her confidence, resilience, and independence.

Please consider the following points about Victoria’s candidacy:

Thinker: Victoria enjoys learning. She searches for overarching ideas and how their learning connects

After graduating high school, she majored in chemistry at Queens College, and in 1942 she graduated with honors and a B.S. degree. She started tutoring at Queens College to earn money for her master's degree at New York University. The following year, Daly earned her master of science degree in 1943, from New York University. This was not good enough for Daly because she enjoyed studying and saw herself as a “good student” (CBB par.8). She wanted to pursue a career in chemistry, even though it was difficult for women to achieve this in the 1940’s.…

There is not a motivation to encourage them to take highly demanding courses, and since they are new in the system, they are unable to complain for something different. In addition, even if they complain, they are excluded from the option of taking a harder class because of the English level they can handle. The argument is unfair for those who excel in mathematical and scientific ability but lack of English proficiency.…
