He expresses himself in a more verbal manor than on paper. The whole battle started with a misunderstanding. In the mountain village, the civil patrol was responsible for defending the community against guerrillas. The civil patrol was primarily made up of older gentlemen and young boys. However, on September 9, 1982, the civil patrol mistakenly thought that the olive green uniforms of the army were guerrillas and started attacking. The army thought that the civil patrol was actually an army of guerillas and started murdering them. Montejo protected his students and got involved after the firing ceased and tried to convince the army otherwise. He says, “I focused my mind so I would not stumble over my own words or fall into the traps they were setting for me,” (Montejo 42).
