Reflective Essay: My Development As A Writer

Improved Essays
I came into my first semester of paideia thinking I had a strong background in writing from my previous high school courses. However, it was brought to my attention that there were several ways that I could improve my writing thus leading to stronger, more solid papers. I am first going to give you two examples of how I have developed as a writer. My first point of development is making my theses more clear and specific. I am going to compare my weak thesis in Paper two to my Paper Three’s strong thesis to prove that I have made improvement. The thesis in my second paper reads “Victor Frankenstein’s morals regressed throughout the development of the creature by not giving the creature emotional support or the education that he needed to live as a normal human” (Paper Two Thesis). The first issue with this thesis is that it is very broad. I should have pined down a specific reason as to why Victor Frankenstein’s morals regressed from lack of emotional support for the creature. There are many ways the creatures emotions could have been supported and how he could have been educated. Focusing on two or three of those ways would have made that part of my thesis more specific. Adding those specific ways would have lead to a clearer …show more content…
I am going to compare how I improved from not using the lecture in my first paper to how I provided ample evidence in my third paper. The first issue in Paper One was brought to my attention by Dr. Gardner who said “it would have helped your essay to use Klammer lecture material on pro-slavery humanitarian argument to set the paper up” (Paper One, bottom of forth page). Meaning, before I started in on my argument, I should have given the reader the pro-slavery argument. Doing so would have given the reader an insight as to why people (like slave owners) in the 1800’s thought in-slaving humans was a way of “bettering” and “improving”

Exercising My Writing Skills Writing is evolving by the day in the English language, in other words communication is evolving on the daily since writing is our main source of communication. Learning how to write the English language in an academic setting has been one of my greatest accomplishments as a scholar, despite the fact that, I am still learning new skills daily on how to improve my writing. Even though, I am not the best the writer, I have gained enough strength in my writing to separate me from the average writer. In other words, the best way to improve on something is by practicing, and that is a lesson writing papers has taught me. One of my greatest skills as a writer in my opinion is being able to expand on a topic.…

    Foer's Argument Analysis

In the first essay, the student starts by writing a short summary as to what the article is about. The student then lists the two reasons as to why Foer’s argument is persuasive in a straight-to-the-point, clear, and organized manner. This intro was probably the strongest of the four. However, the second paragraph starts off by writing about how many Americans do not want to accept soccer as a pastime as many other countries have. There is little argument made in this paragraph as to how Foer is persuasive; here it is mostly summary of the article.…

I wrote one “source-based argumentative essay” in high school: my final essay from sophomore English. The guidelines were to write a four to eight page paper on any topic of your choice, but the thesis of the paper had to come across clearly. At the time, my personal goals were to write about something no one else would, as well as get an A in the class. As a future collegiate writer, I feel as though I have the habits and potential strengths to be successful, but my biggest weakness is that I do not know how to write a professional essay and I am a reluctant editor.…

The way I move through my own writing process is simple. I always start with research on a specific topic that an instructor gives me. I’m that kind of person that loves to highlight the important details of someone else’s information so I can admire her or his work in my papers. Then after finding the right amount of work to compose my own paper I start out with a title page.…

My mind feels like a 1000 piece puzzle missing a piece. I can’t simply find the right words to say to start this paper. It is always like this when freewriting; the idea of freewriting in and of itself frightens me. Never able to put the words in my head onto paper in a way that it can be read eloquently by others. My hands start to cramp automatically at the idea of freewriting.…

I have always believed that teachers shape the people we become. They influence us just as much as our family. I have been fortunate enough to meet four extraordinary teachers along my educational path. They taught me not only how to improve my writing, but life lessons that made me the thinker and writer I am today. Mrs. Ceci was the first teacher who brought me out of my shell.…

This semester, I have learned a lot from this English 101 course. I have not only learned from you, but also from my peers and myself. Entering this class, I had a good understanding of what this course was about because I took a pre-English class over the summer. Although I feel it provided me with a decent grasp of the course, the material of pre-English was condensed into six weeks, so there was still a lot left to learn. English 101 was very beneficial because it helped strengthen my writing as it also gave me an introduction to college writing.…

To be completely honest I have mixed feelings about writing and I don’t really have any memorable experiences that made me feel this way, it is just the experiences that I have had with the subject while trying to apply it. I struggle with what to write down mostly and creativity in general and I don’t really excel at any part of it. If I were to say I “excel” at anything it would be revising my work and adding to it. At the end of the semester I hope that I have relearned some key writing elements that lack of practice has caused me to lose.…

Growing up I always knew I loved to read. There was a time when I thought reading was just for school assignments or if someone have told me to read something not for anything else. When I started to get into sports I began to enjoy reading, particularly sports magazines, online articles, and little by little I started seeing myself reading more and discovering new things that I might have liked but never got a chance to read about them. And that made me enjoy reading about my favorite athletes, their life stories and how they succeeded in their lives.…
