Rapport and Trust Building
Building trust and rapport with a client who has the potential to become a victim of a violent crime requires the social worker needs to be aware of the reality of the violence, sensitive to the hesitation of the client to trust authority figures, as well as identification of barriers that may be present. When dealing with a victim of a violent crime, as in the case of Inez, after the fact the social worker will need to approach with empathy and support despite the client?s decision to not follow advice given during the intake appointment. Both will need to be educated on alternate lifestyles, healthy relationship skills, and ongoing cognitive reframing techniques once her health has stabilized. In addition, a concrete safety plan will need to be developed to maintain Inez?s safety, as well as the safety of her family if the violence escalates.
Reasoning Behind the Recommendations
The reasoning for the recommended actions is to address the presenting issues from a systems view. Addressing Inez from a micro view will alienate her support system and potentially continue having her safety be at risk. Working with her support system, as well as Inez, allows for education on alternate lifestyles and implementation of a safety plan that can be accessed by all parties.
Lessons Learned
Working with victims ? potential or actual ? of violence can be a complicating treatment plan. All aspects and systems impacting the client will need to be addressed and evaluated to ensure the client?s needs are being met in a culturally specific manner. This case was able to explore and evaluate a client from a resistance level through to the outcome. It allows for a view of noncompliance with treatment plans to be reviewed in such a way to accept that self-determination may not always result in a positive
