Vickie Hale Subcultures Analysis

When I look at subcultures by Vickie Hale
Looking at subcultures I see that they are basically mini cultures that form within a larger culture. For example, everything from desperate housewives to Cosplayers is a part of the vast subculture that makes up our world. I believe subcultures form in order for people to feel like they stand out from everybody else and because in some ways they are different from others or have different interests. The creation of sub cultures have come from different places, some come from one's own career or career goals, others form from the kind of lifestyle one may live and then again there are those subcultures that form from what we like or enjoy, like music, art, etc.

In the United States, subcultures might include hippies, Goths, fans of hip hop or heavy metal and even bikers. If I would’ve been asked this question in high school, I would’ve been a part of both the jock subculture and the preppy subculture but I no longer play sports so I would just consider my self to be a part of the preppy subculture, I’m also a part of the student subculture, I’m a part of the Protestant Church so to the Catholic Church I am considered part of the subculture and I’m a republican.…

It’s fascinating how people have been able to make so many different definitions for the word culture; a word that was thought to have one singular definition. People of all cultures are unique not just in their methods and ways of life, but also in their definitions of culture. One person can describe culture as something that can bring family and a community together, but another person may define it as the exact opposite; something that tears people apart and in turn will rip apart a community. Neither of them are wrong or right however, because culture is something that is tangible. Culture is something that changes with time instead of against it.…

Culture is made up of anything from age, disabilities, ethnicity, heritage and gender, to origin, and religion. According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, culture is defined as “the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group; also: the characteristic features of everyday existence (as diversions or a way of life) shared by people in a place or time” When I first thought about culture I thought of all the different countries and origins, but it is so much more specific than that. It could be as simple as the differences between a group of people such as musicians or athletes. I have experienced the separation between the two living on the campus of Arizona Christian University. Acknowledging the differences between the way the athletes see the school, or the way that the musicians see the school and each other.…

The subculture I choose to observe were young black men within their neighborhoods, the ins and outs of what draws young black men to choose to involve themselves into the a life of crime. I had no idea where I was going to observe such a group, I feared going to certain areas in the North West side of Tulsa, where there are active gangs who live there. I knew of no one that could accompany me, however, my aunt in Texas invited me to spend the weekend with her, because she had friend who was a police officer , the added bonus is that he was a Black man who patrolled the streets of North Dallas, where there are high levels of crime and gang participation. I was raised in a sheltered environment, both my parents came from broken homes and they did not want that life for us and so they worked on their marriage until we grew up and graduated high school. The only history I can relate to my subculture group is that I am a young black man and I always wondered why some young black men are set back, is it because there is not a family unity, perhaps, a father is not present or is but not actively involved in their lives.…
