There are multiple individuals and institutions that advise the president. One would be the vice president. The vice president presides over the senate proceedings. They also have the power to cast votes in the senate if there is a tie needed to break it. They have other formal jobs like becoming president if the current president dies, becomes incapacitated, resigns, or if they are impeached. Out of the 44 presidents, 9 of them were vice presidents who became the president in midterm. Vice president Dick Cheney who was in office with President George W. Bush, played a huge role and influence over many of the policy decisions. Some of the decisions were things like rights of terror suspects, tax and spending policy, and environment decisions.

The president can pardon people imprisoned for federal crimes or the president can alter the prisoner’s sentences. The only thing that he can’t do is pardon anyone who has been impeached or convicted
