Being in the healthcare health can take a toll on a counselor/therapist is many ways. Physically, and mentally fatigue can creep up without a counselor realizing the effects of burn out, vicarious trauma, and compassion fatigue. As a counselor, it is important that we recognize the signs and symptoms of burn-out. Overall, a mentally healthy counselor is much more effective in counseling their client, than a burned-out, fatigued counselor.
Definition
Burnout consists of loss of energy to the point of exhaustion, and loss of enthusiasm. Burnout is connected to loss of job productivity, and impairment of inter-, (Golembiewski et al., 1992; Resilience is the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, significant sources of stress crisis (American Psychology Association, n.d.). Vicarious trauma differs from burn-out in that the counselor experiences empathetic engagement with the client to the point that they take on the experiences and feelings of their client. These are examples of what can happen to a mental health worker exposed to trauma over a period time (James & Gilliland, 2013).
