Personal Narrative: Rise Up

Improved Essays
Life is repetitive and dull with the indication that nothing is moving forward. There was no mettle left to defeat life's difficulties; however, I saw the light. Having parents who have higher expectations of me than my siblings, gives me a reason to “Rise Up.” Likewise, Andra Day explicates her lyrics as inspirational and provides the meaning of persistence through her music. Her tone releases a vibe to always take the next step and carry the mindset that giving up is not an option. Furthermore, I've discovered my motivation to strive toward them: the letter A.

My method is listening to an emotional and spiritual song such as “Rise Up” by Andra Day. The vibrancy and courageous technique she incorporates in her lyrics really drive the theme of perseverance. Day’s lyrics, “You're broken down and tired of living life on a merry go round." defines both me and Cinderella. Just the sentence alone, I can already interpret some sorrow, grief, disappointment, tension, and so on. My connection I have to elicit this quote would be when I was Iost under the monotony of taking care of home and siblings. This seemed like a never-ending task and a lack of free-time, which most likely ended in stress. Meanwhile, throughout Day’s lyrics, she transcends to a powerful uplifting chorus, “And I'll rise up…,” which creates a sense of ease and empowerment that completely disregards negativity and enlightens my inner self to strive to what is waiting for me. Day creates a vision, specifically through her key changes, when she sings, that you can find beauty in anything not

I chose the song “Still I Rise” by Rosephanye Powell and for the purpose of this paper I chose Wellesley College women’s choir. In my high school career, I’ve sung this song twice, one time my freshman year and again the spring of this year, my junior year. Rosephanye Powell’s song was inspired by a poem called “Still I Rise” by poet Maya Angelou. Written in 2005, the song was meant to be a women’s anthem, it was to show that even after a past full of; tears, struggle, and heartache, a woman can grow stronger and rise above the challenges, hence the name “Still I Rise”.…

Those are all qualities that help people overcome obstacles. The articles “The Contender” by Derek Burnett, “Paralympic Star Makes History On NBA Stage” by E. Lancaster, and “Life in the Red” by Benedict Carey all show how people overcame obstacles to achieve their dreams. After reading and annotating articles about a determined Kyle Maynard, a motivational speaker Blake Leeper, and the patient LaKeisha community, one could make the choice to be strong, to have a positive attitude, and to ‘cut out’ what’s not important.
