In the story, Viana and her mother encountered altercations about her mother’s racist remarks on other race, especially black. Every altercation pertained to why a Latin should not date someone with a different identity. One situation basically confirmed that Viana''s mother was indeed racist towards African-American because she did not eat for two days after her daughter mentioned she would date a black man. Her mother tried several times to convince Viana to only date inside of her race because it was only right. However, Viana knew she could not judge someone when she is living in poverty herself.
