Veterinary Sustainability:
The Dream of Working in the Profession and Its Environmental Impact The veterinary field is full of challenges when it comes to success in the profession. As many people are becoming more aware of the environment and the impact that humans have in destroying Earth, small businesses such as veterinary hospitals work to utilize sustainable efforts not only for the purpose of saving money, but also to assist in maintaining the health of the animals and their owners. Veterinarians play a critical role in the health of animals, humans, and the environment. Proven problems for veterinary businesses include: improving energy and water efficiency, reducing waste production and improving its management, as well as reducing

Many don’t realize that these efforts are often very impactful even at the individual level. With the desire for me to open up my own animal hospital for the hopes of offering wonderful and economical service, it is vital that my hospital is powered by environmentally sustainable efforts, not only to save money that I can use to help care for the animals in hospital, but to also ensure that I continue to put the welfare of not only my patients first, but the clients that care for them too. Given that the veterinary field is front and center in the fight for a sustainable Earth, I felt that it was vital that I join the field to work towards improving the environment which is home to thousands of animals that I may care for and have to rehabilitate in the near …show more content…
Animals have always been my passion and they live in the environment that humans are currently destroying. If efforts are not taken now, many animals will die and some species will go extinct. As a veterinarian, you take an oath to protect the welfare of animals, including the environment that houses them. When I first thought about my field of specialty, I had always thought that the veterinarians were the ones who took care of dogs and cats. Growing up in a suburban area where there wasn’t any farm related animals, it never occurred to me that they needed healthcare too. As I grew older and became more aware of the importance of a veterinarian in human health, I became more inspired to work with farm animals as well as large animals in the desire to assist in their conservation efforts. Although it didn’t necessarily change my career path, it changed my simple mind of what a veterinarian could do to benefit Earth allowing me to see the importance of what it is to be a veterinarian and have the ability to care for a multitude of animals ranging in different shapes and sizes, all with different needs for both themselves and the community at

I worked in the biology lab labeling pelts, bones, and animal specimens; by twenty-one, I obtained my bachelor’s degree and strived for my first job out of university. That summer, I joined Humane Society Naples and worked as a veterinary assistant, while also volunteering at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida in wildlife rehabilitation. This is my turning point and reminds me of Claudia at age seven, who wanted to save animals. The most vivid and unforgettable part of my time there was seeing the transformation of the animal’s health and behavior. From the time, they come into the shelter, scared and sometimes in pain, to then being apart of the team to medically assess and treat them, to witness their ability to play with other animals, and then to the joys of adopters coming in looking for their forever pet, is…

From vaccinating kittens to resuscitating a critical care patient, small animal veterinarians help pet owners create the best life for their companions. Taking care of my pets has been an irreplaceable experience, and I hope to help form similar relationships. Other types of veterinarians focus on research, foreign diseases, and the protection of our food supply. Veterinarians are increasingly dealing with the spread of zoonotic diseases such as the avian flu, leptospirosis, and salmonella. In less privileged countries, these diseases greatly affect food supply, so it is extremely important for vets to be immersed in our environment's health.…

Today, we understand there is tension between animals and humans as there is a “competition for land and resources” (Siebert 354). But, in the future, we might have an environment in which society will “create conditions without it being this life-and-death situation” (Siebert 362) in order to survive. As humans are learning “how to live with wild animals” (Siebert 362), society might focus its attention “in multiple directions at once, not just on outcomes, but on process and on interactions” (Davidson 53) to ensure a collaborative relationship with wild animals. Global society in the future will probably be more willing to “... improve… learn, by sharing insights and working together collectively” (Davidson 51). We will most likely apply the same medical procedures that we are currently applying on humans, on wild animals too; “... rehabilitation… relies on the basic trauma therapy principles now being applied to elephants” (Siebert 364).…

My interest in the veterinary field began when I was six, when I arbitrarily announced I was going to be a veterinarian simply because I loved animals. Since I was quite young at the time, I was unaware what the job actually entailed. Consequently, I was somehow under the impression that if I watched National Geographic and Animal Planet, then I could immediately become a veterinarian upon graduating high school. I was undeterred when I realized just how much time that needed to be dedicated to school, and instead, it motivated me to take challenging classes in high school and to pursue a job at an animal hospital.…

In today’s society, the health care industry produces an excessive amount of waste. Waste is generated from many different ways in hospitals and in health care facilities in the United States as well as internationally. The increased use of disposables and the discarding of unused material from standardized or prepackaged surgical packs contribute to the rise of waste material from the health care industry. The way waste is disposed of is not only hazardous to the health of the general population, but to the environment as well. There is numerous amount of ways to reduce waste production in addition to controlling the way waste is disposed of, both of which will contribute to a “greener”, more sustainable environment.…

To back this, the article states that “animal welfare is important for commercial reasons, both directly, by increasing a businesses’ overall sustainability, and indirectly, by addressing society’s expectations of how animals should be treated and how food should be produced” (Park and Singer 31). There is an apparent sense of urgency when it comes to the issues surrounding animal welfare. Animals are being kept in intensive confinement areas, spreading diseases and unable to grow properly. This not only affects the animals, but also the welfare of them, the health of humans, and the resources of the planet. Another downside of the Industrialized Farming Animal Production is that they have created an escalating range of detrimental environmental effects on local and regional water, air and soil resources (Carlin). “More than half, 54%, of all confined farm animals by weight are concentrated in just 5% of the country’s industrial animal production facilities” (HSUS 2008). The majority of the environmental harm caused by these factory farms results from the high volume of waste that must be stored and disposed of while incessantly confining a large number of animals mostly indoors, “with some operations producing as much [waste] as an entire city” (HSUS 2008). The USDA Agricultural Research Services (ARS) estimated the manure output from farm animals…
