During my work experience in two veterinary practices I was able to study the after effects of anaesthesia and learn about post-treatment patient care. Aware that thoroughly cleaning kennels is an important, if sometimes unpleasant, task I readily cleaned up after outpatients. I followed the blood sampling process through to the end – from taking the blood to testing the sample and obtaining the results, and was able to run a sample myself under supervision. While observing surgery I witnessed the constant vigilance of the veterinary nurses when monitoring the patients heart rate and breathing, and was fortunate to be permitted to listen myself. This placement allowed me to develop knowledge of safe practice with animals and team work. Several cats were admitted with Feline Aids, sparking my interest in the illness and during my second practice placement, I was able to observe the snap test for FIV and FeLV in person which deepened my understanding. Volunteering at the farm and stables enabled me to gain experience with larger animals, and I learnt several animals handling techniques including the quick-release knot.
