There are many career choices within the veterinary profession. What are your future career goals and why?

My goals as a veterinarian involve directly helping people care for their pets and traveling to underdeveloped countries to improve animal health and agriculture. I want to begin my career as an emergency vet because I enjoy the immediate problem solving, work well under pressure, and am compassionate with clients. I'm impressed with the collaboration the ER doctors I work with have and think it would be a great introduction to the field. After gaining experience, I plan to open my own practice. Owning a pet is expensive, and I hope to provide efficient healthcare to different social classes by finding plans for different budgets. Lastly, I want to use my veterinary skills to help underprivileged communities around the world. I recently visited Nicaragua and the number of emaciated animals, of all species, was alarming. From vaccinating kittens to resuscitating a critical care patient, small animal veterinarians help pet owners create the best life for their companions. Taking care of my pets has been an irreplaceable experience, and I hope to help form similar relationships. Other types of veterinarians focus on research, foreign diseases, and the protection of our food supply. Veterinarians are increasingly dealing with the spread of zoonotic diseases such as the avian flu, leptospirosis, and salmonella. In less privileged countries, these diseases greatly affect food supply, so it is extremely important for vets to be immersed in our environment's health. As a veterinarian, I hope to contribute to society by providing adequate healthcare to animals in need, spreading awareness to protect people from animal related diseases, and by promoting healthy agriculture in underdeveloped
