I’ve always loved animals, I grew up around them all of my life. I have owned animals for as long as I can remember. I can still remember my first animal, a bearded dragon. Animals are my passion, and I have been caring, raising, and breeding animals for as long as I can remember. My family has owned animals from horses to a 6.5 foot Red tail boa. I can already clean and dress wounds and do many other things required of veterinarians. My mother is a veterinarian technician, based on my experience and the fact that I was born with the love of animals I believe I can have a successful career as a veterinarian. There is lots of communication between with your clients, co-workers. Most of the day you are either treating animals or sitting around waiting for pets. You work pretty regular hours depending on the place you work and if there’s a surgery or a very busy day. You work usually from Monday - Friday and sometimes a day on the weekend. There’s a very high stress level because if you make a mistake the animal can die. When working with animals that are frightened or in pain, veterinarians risk being bitten,kicked, or scratched (Occupational Outlook Handout). In fact my mother was bitten by a cat she was treating on Wednesday.Most Veterinarians work in private clinics and hospitals.Others travel to farms,work in laboratories, or classrooms, or work for the government (Occupational Outlook Handout). Working with exotic animals poses a much greater risk than working with just dogs and cats. There’s danger of being mauled or killed, and the animals are harder to treat.Although it takes many years of education to become a veterinarian, the salary will make up for that time. The veterinarians that take care of our animals must have a doctoral, or professional degree. Vet school is highly competitive and having previous experience such as an internship will greatly increase your chances of getting accepted into school. To be a veterinarian you must be able to work with many types of animals and illnesses and have a high stress tolerance. The work can be emotionally stressful, as veterinarians deal with sick animals and the animals’ anxious owners (Occupational Outlook Handout). You also must be dependable, have attention to detail, stress tolerance, concern for others, and self control. You need to be good at science, problem solving, and critical thinking.
