As a visually impaired Veteran who has received blind rehabilitation services in the past I was able to gain a unique perspective into what blind rehabilitation services are. I was able to witness first-hand instruction from certified rehabilitation therapist as a student and take the knowledge of the practice and procedures to graduate school at Western Michigan University. Ability to develop a basic written blind/vision rehabilitation plan from assessment results and develop more complex plans with consultation from supervisor.
During my observation and internship time I was able to watch assessments and when the certified instructor was finished I was able to ask questions and make comments on what I thought would be a good plan of care for the Veteran. I was allowed the chance to compare my understanding of the results to the instructor’s results and have time to compare and contrast any disparities we may have had.
As I progressed through my internship I was able to interpret assessment results and integrate a rehabilitation plan. I am able to interpret the results by gaining a history through the questionnaire, observing the Veteran perform specific tasks, and establish goals based off of the Veterans skillset and needs. I continue to use these set of skills, as well as, add to them through different experiences throughout my fellowship.
With all if the information that I obtain I am able to develop a plan for rehabilitation, specific to the Veterans needs/goals. If the goals require adaptive equipment/ devices I am able to make professional recommendations to the Veteran and my supervisor to in order to begin …show more content…
I have been able to adjust my style of teaching to each Veteran based off of their assessment results and particular skillset. I have learned that every Veteran is different and each one will have a different style of learning and I feel it is important to be able to adjust my style to ensure that they receive the best instruction
