After reading Gabriel Marquez’s short story, A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings, I believe that the mysterious winged man is indeed an angle. Throughout the narrative, many of the characters refuse to believe the sickly man to be an angle. Pelayo, and Elisenda believe the man to be a shipwrecked sailor, while Father Gonzaga believes him to be an imposter, as the man does not adhere to his angelic standards. Only Pelayo and Elisenda’s neighbor, “who knew everything about life and death” could see the man for who he truly is, and even then she wishes for the angel to be clubbed to death.…

In chapter nineteen of HTRLLAP, Foster talks about geography. In Gabriel García Márquez's story, “The Handsomest Drowned Man In the World,” the geography was crucial to the story because it plays off reader’s expectations that the villagers will reject the stranger. The story starts with a drowned man washing up on the shore. Had the story taken place in a landlocked area, instead of a remote coastal village, there would be no shore. Thus, there could be no drowned man.…

In the short story The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World there is a very noticeable size difference between Esteban and the natives. With the amount of emphasis Marquez puts on the size difference, he is trying to portray something. He is using the size difference as a symbol to show how the natives have grown into people the size of Esteban, not physically but more on a personal level. Before the people found Esteban, the island was bland: no flowers, unpainted houses and narrowed dreams. Then after they sent Esteban off with a proper burial the natives transformed the island into a beautiful island.…

Having Esteban washed up on shore, being stolen from the sea subtly shows that just about everyone, humans or not, is aware of Esteban’s greatness by his size and beauty. However, Gabriel Garcia Marquez doesn’t use just beauty to describe characters. In the story “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings,” the old man, who is supposedly an angel, is shown to be old, tattered, worn down, and almost seems to be nothing like an angel. “His only supernatural virtue seemed to be patience. Especially during the first days, when the hens pecked at him, searching for the stellar parasites that proliferated in his wings, and the cripples pulled out feathers to touch their defective parts with, and even the most merciful threw stones at him, trying to get him to rise so that they could see him standing.…
