In the article “Why Being a Middle Manager is so Exhausting” the authors Eric M. Anicich and Jacob B. Hirsh described power exercised by middle managers as “complicated” since they engage in two type of interpersonal relationships using lower power vs. higher power (bosses vs. subordinates’ relationship).
Based on the authors’ explanation, vertical code switching could be defined as “the act of alternating between behavioral patterns that are directed toward higher-power and lower-power interaction partners”. I have illustrated the situation below: There is a very unique correlation between the company’s strengths, weaknesses and external environment. The lack of communication between Jack and his team, a weakness, directly leads to the company falling behind the competition, its external environment. The company’s corporate level strategy is in shambles. When the CEO secludes himself from the rest of his team and only focuses on one aspect of business level strategy, product innovation, the company will not operate at full capacity. Interboro’s business level strategy can be summed up in the following quote by its head of production, Frank Tambor: “he didn't have much faith that anyone in the company could come up with ideas, so he didn't really develop the capability.”…

Abraham Lincoln famously remarked that “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” The power belongs to those who want to get the top position in organizations with personal qualities, such as leadership, humility, ambition, etc. In this book, Jeffrey Pfeffer examines how to get the power from the individuals’ perspective to make and implement decisions by considering various situations. Also, he describes that power is a positive mechanism in managing the organizations effectively since he has also viewed it as obtained common profits or gains through collectively working together. Such opinion of him about power is diametrically opposed to our common norm that power connotes a conservative…

Power difference is inevitable in most situations, as in one way or another, there is someone who is societally above another in rank and hold of power; this interaction between subordinate and dominant is, as described by James C. Scott in his work Behind the Official Story, a “public transcript,” or “the open interaction between subordinate and dominant” (Scott 2). This is opposed to any interaction that takes place away from the view of dominants, and often amongst those who are of similar rank, named by Scott the “hidden transcript,” or “Discourse that takes place ‘offstage,’ beyond direct observation of powerholders” (Scott 4). It is these “masks” that guide social interactions in a multitude of areas, including work environments. Charles Duhigg’s chapter “Teams: Psychological Safety at Google and Saturday Night Live,” emphasizes an important social interaction in work environments in the form of a positive norm: psychological safety. Psychological…

However, he does not translate “which is” to Korean, and just speaks like an English speaker. The reason is that part is hard to translate to Korean. Korean is a postposition language, so they put the described words or sentence before the word, but English is a postposition language such as they can use “which is” to describe the word.…

La mayoría de los hispanohablantes de los Estados Unidos que son segunda or tercera generations often develop their own language among the English and Spanish languages. In most of these second and third generations, Spanish is commonly spoken in the house and English is learned through schooling or just interactions with other English speaking people in one's community. A stigma that derives from this homemade language is that the person who speaks Spanglish might not know enough Spanish or they might not know enough English, therefore, they interchange, share, extended and do code-switching. This phenomenon leads to the person who speaks Spanglish to second-guess or doubt their identity or wrongfully choose an identity that does not feel…

Introduction: Power comes from the ability to control other’s happiness and make others dependent on them but no person is totally dependent on another. Emerson’s Power Dependency Theory explains how power and dependency are reciprocal and how the power and dependence are kept in check through balancing operations. Power and dependence are important concepts to understand because they are something that plays out in one’s everyday relationships and one does not even recognize it. One place that the concepts of Emerson’s theory can be seen clearly is in UCSB’s Greek community – in the relationship between the community, the university administration, and each Greek organization’s members.…

A very understandable synopsis is where two fundamentally different hemispheres interact (Schutz & Bloch 2006). In such a case there is an inherent possibility of a breakdown of inter-departmental communication. This scenario can be further understood with the help of an example. For instance, consider the credit team of a bank and the sales team of a Bank to be these two hemispheres. The sales team is driven by a ‘maximum sales’ motive, whereas the credit team is a checkpoint to filter all the good and bad loans.…
