Vertical Bullying In Nursing

Stanley (2010) explains that vertical bullying is a pattern of repeated behavior that lasts over 6 months and occurs between individuals at different power levels on the nursing hierarchy, such as a nurse manager or charge nurse to staff nurse. In contrast, lateral bullying occurs between peers at the same power level on the nursing hierarchy, such as staff nurse to staff nurse or nurse manager to nurse manager (Stanley, 2010). In addition, Adams and Maykut (2015) explain that bullying is characterized by the ongoing health or career endangering mistreatment of an employee and reflects the misuse of actual or perceived power that undermines a nurse’s ability to succeed or do good and leaves them feeling hurt, frightened, angry or powerless. …show more content…
In addition, it is stated that “when tension is elevated in patient care areas, nursing staff are not likely to perform at their best and the result is often poor patient care” (Adams & Maykut, 2015, p 770). Meires (2018) states that “the Joint Commission (2008) issued a sentinel alert tying intimidation and possibly other bullying behaviors to errors, increased costs of care, personnel turnover, poorer patient satisfaction, and preventable adverse events.” Based on these definitions and statistics, working in an environment where nurses are not performing at their best or feel intimidated or frightened to ask questions sets the stage for near misses or medication …show more content…
