Veronica Roth's Divergent

Divergent is a fantastic young adult, dystopian book by Veronica Roth, published by HarperCollins Publishers in 2011. This book is about a girl named Beatrice who lives in a post-apocalyptic Chicago and has to decide on where she truly belongs and where she’ll stay for the rest of her life. As a sixteen year old, this can prove to be a difficult task. I love this story and this is one of my favourite stories that I have ever read. Beatrice Prior lives in a future version of Chicago where there are five factions. Each faction thinks one virtue is best: Dauntless believe in bravery, Erudite love knowledge, Abnegation is pro-self-sacrifice, Amity has confidence in in friendship, and Candor is into honesty. Beatrice grew up in an Abnegation …show more content…
The other main characters are Tobias (Four) who is the love interest of Tris, and Christina who is Beatrice’s best friend when she joins her new faction. The tone of this story is gloomy since it’s about a post-apocalyptic world where a terrible war breaks out and the climax of the novel is the battle. The main literary device is symbolism. There is quite a bit of symbolism in Divergent such as their haircuts, clothes, what symbols they use in the choosing ceremony. Almost everything about the factions is pretty symbolic of how their members think about the world. In the real world, clothing may tell us something about a person, but Divergent takes this to the extreme, where every faction’s clothing tells us how they see the world. Abnegation dresses all in gray so they don't stand out, Amity dresses in red or yellow clothes and always comfortably because their main goal is being happy and friendly so they’re always brightly coloured and feeling fine. Candor dresses in black and white because they see the truth as black and white, so that is what they wear. Dauntless dress all in black and are into piercings and tattoos. Black isn’t symbolic of how brave they are but they're supposed to seem cool and rebellious and individualistic. The Dauntless use their piercings and tattoos to stick out and they’re basically the opposite of the Abnegation with their desire to …show more content…
I love this book because it’s very positive and relatable other than the obvious parts such as the factions and the war. The story is about a young girl who is terrified about choosing her future and potentially making the wrong decision. Plus, I love the romance which is very sweet and is basically my favourite love story because it starts out as a few lingering looks and turns into them realizing their feelings for each other and falling in love. All in all, it’s a wonderful story and I would gladly recommend it to

This book is a good book because of the visualizations, which is a necessity in a book like this due to most readers never experiencing this traitorous journey. I also appreciate the careful pairing of characters. There is a victim everyone can relate to in this book. There are lovers, overworked coworkers, friends, and more. I like that this helps the reader connect to the book, even though the experiences aren’t the same the victims are everyday people.…

Everyone in the world wants to belong. In the two books, The Year of Secret Assignments, by Jaclyn Moriarty (Realistic fiction), and Divergent, by Veronica Roth ( Science fiction), they both develop the theme of how it can sometimes be hard to belong into two different places, but it can sometimes come easily to someone and won’t be a problem at all. To begin, The Year of Secret Assignments, definitely develops that it can be hard for people to fit into a place just because they aren’t accepted, yet the author also develops the theme that it’s easy to belong into two different places but it depends on where you are trying to fit in. First of all, in the novel, it states, “ Then he finished by leaning in close and saying, ‘ I’ve got a girlfriend…

The first dystopian piece of fiction to be created is credited to the work of H.G. Wells, who published The Time Machine in 1895. Since The Time Machine, hundreds of thousands of dystopian fiction works have been published, making it one of the most popular genres in works with young adult audiences, be it literature or movies. The movie The Hunger Games, based on a book published in 2008 by Suzanne Collins, is one of these works of dystopian fiction. The dystopian genre has several common themes; there are defining characteristics of the dystopian genre used, such as human rights violations, the society is usually subject to some sort of control, and the protagonist reveals these issues to the audience throughout the piece.…

The book “Four” by Veronica Roth is one of the sequences of the Divergent story. However, it is absolutely unecessary to read it in order to follow the scenario: it is simply the story told from a different perspective-- Tris’ friend, Tobias Eaton. Despite the general characteristic, the novel provides a deeper understanding of the character himself, and chronologically taking place before all other novels, it offers some unique details over the situation that will occur onward.…
