When the trainees are doubtful of the Dauntless’ training methods, Four says “As Dauntless we fight to protect every life inside the fence without fail. That’s why we train you the way we do, to teach you not to give up and to find out who has what it takes” (Divergent). The Dauntless are clearly driven by passion and emotions rather than rational thinking. They are considered crazy by thinking on impulse with little to no thought. These qualities are toxic to their minds as it results in dangerous outcomes. They protect the world inside the fence rather than think about the false order in the world. Despite the linear thought processes of the factions, balance can be found in the Divergents. When Beatrice’s mother explains the true nature of the Divergents to Beatrice, she states, “You don’t conform, your mind works in a million different ways. They’re scared of you” (Divergent). The Divergent mind is demonstrated to be the healthiest yet most dangerous mindset. They are a balance of all the factions and a mix of all the psyches. Although they are the most rational thinkers, they are considered an outlier to society. They do not fit in one place alone, so they do not fit in the system.
