In Woman in a Purple Coat (1937), Matisse painted his assistant and companion, reclining in a Moroccan costume, set in an interior with exotic patterns and abstract ornamentation. He has avoided straight lines in this composition, however the colours clash in such a way that the image still works. He uses colour and light to rejoice in life. This was amongst the last of Matisse’s oil paintings. He soon began making paper cut-out collages instead of working in paint, due to ill health.…

Vermeer’s Hat: The Seventeenth Century and the Dawn of the Global World, by Timothy Brook, sets out to explain how the world was transformed during the seventeenth century through a growing world market and expanding globalization between civilizations and cultures that either had not have contact or limited contact in the past. The book is organized into eight sections, each corresponding to a different piece of art created by Johannes Vermeer and other artists. Each of these sections covers a different factor, such as the economy for Chinese goods or the work and explorations around the world to create an accurate map of the world, which led to the overall globalization during this time. Beginning with the first section of the book, The View from Delft, the…

Naturally, after he came of age, Napoleon exiled himself from his family and went to Russia, where he had heard rumors of a famous artist hosting art lessons on abstract art. However, only after two days of beginning the classes, Napoleon began degrading other students, sometimes even purposely sabotaging their art. Not surprisingly, he was deported out of Russia for his rude manners only a week after arriving and headed for Paris.…

In the paintings above, just from looking at them, you can tell by the looks on their faces that they are thinking about something.
