Verizon Communications is a rather young company compared to most of its competitors. It was created in 2000 in its current form, although its origins can be tracked back to 1984 when AT&T was split up from one large service provider and equipment maker into eight regional companies. With the introduction of consumer wireless communications technology in 1995 and accompanying regulations, companies started to merge and form partnerships. One such merger was between NYNEX and Bell Atlantic. This in turn resulted in the launch of Verizon Communications in 2000 when Bell Atlantic merged with GTE communications and Verizon Wireless, with a deal with French company Vodafone in 2002.
