Verizon Hall Performance Analysis

Decent Essays
What can I say besides what an amazing experience? As I basically stumbled into the Verizon hall trying to seem as prim and proper as possible I began to feel the intensity of what I was going to experience. As the performers tuned their instruments, and were prepping to begin their performance I felt a multitude of different emotions and trained to maintain my composure because I actually became somewhat excited in anticipation. I never really realize how massive the areas I am are until I finally was sitting in my seat in the Verizon Hall, and as the rows filled up slowly but surely I became so invested in the entire atmosphere and magnitude of the performance. A few moments after my realizations the performance began. It opened up with

I loved the last piece in the third movement because it was played very well and it is an iconic piece. I had different emotions for the individual pieces were I felt at ease, delighted, and anxious with a dynamic feeling when the pieces go fast paced. This time I remembered the fast parts since I expected than the other first concert. The most memorable was Moonlight, presto movement. For the chamber groups they projected a playful vibe between each other enjoying when it alternates to one another.…

I was absolutely mind boggled by the reactions that I perceived from the stage! I saw my tough and not-so-sensitive dad sobbing, my non-believer friend attentive, and the rest of the congregation worshipping with me. I got my first standing ovation. I was so proud to take it in with my fellow praise team members. Come to find out, by practicing with my team in front of people, we influenced them to ask our praise team leader, “What is so different about these kids?”…

What I really enjoyed was the atmosphere. The lights were dimmed so people could feel more comfortable and the music consisted of a good balance of upbeat music, and slow music. Songs were sung and people worshiped for about forty-five minutes. This was a very moving experience. Glancing into the audience, it was evident that everyone was engaged in the worship.…

The minutes before the concert seemed to go by extremely fast and before I knew it, the concert was here. When it was time for my first and easiest solo, my heart beat was pounding in my head and I could feel the sweat dripping off my instrument's keys, but the warm smile from the conductor as my first note sang out put me at ease, and I played a good solo. The performance continued and soon it was time for the big, super exposed one that seemed to end the concert. I completely forgot about the audience and other distractions, and it was just me, my music, the conductor, and the rest of the band playing. Time seemed to slow down, and I put as much heart into the music as I could possibly manage.…

This past Wednesday, Soul Voices, directed by Jazz Studies assistant professor Pete Malinverni held their Spring concert in the Recital Hall of the Music Building. As I walked into the hall, I was surprised by its size and beauty. I had only previously been in the choral hall directly across, and so it was certainly not what I was expecting. From the top of the raked audience, you could see a stage at floor level, framed by two short lighting trees, and dotted with choir risers.…

Walking into the auditorium, I immediately noticed that the atmosphere of the concert was completely different from that of the classical concert I attended weeks earlier. To begin with, it seemed like there was much more of an audience. Everyone seemed excited for the concert to start. As for myself, I was also excited because, on the very front of the program, it said that there was a guest artist that was going to perform with the ensemble. The performers wore more of a business casual look, some were a little more dressed up than others, but overall they looked very well dressed.…

This gave me the impression that the audience were loyal supporters and were not there as first timers, while the yelling and whistling also provided the environment more casualty and informality. The performers were all dressed in black, males being in suits and females’ being in dresses or pant suits. The orchestra then bowed as a group before they performed their first piece, which was significantly different from most concerts I have attended who only bow after their last piece. I was notably surprised to see the orchestra standing for their first piece considering most orchestras sit while performing unless you are a soloist. While performing, the audience did not nod their heads to the music nor did they socialize with other members of the audience, but instead stayed significantly quiet and observed the performance with direct attention.…

Opening night, the dancers that performed in the University Dance Theatre production, had talent, agility, and graceful movements. The concert had a variety of dance genres, visual appeal, and emotions that each piece and the show overall represented. Humor, drama, and serenity were not emotions I thought I would receive while watching these dances. One thing I did not realize would make many of the pieces was how crucial and reliant lighting and graphics were necessary to make the piece more visually interesting. However, I was excepting similar dances and movements; even if, some pieces had comparable choreography and emotional appeal the diversity stood out.…
