Both verbal and nonverbal communication are important in our daily lives. Nonverbal communication often expresses the feelings that we cannot put into words. Verbal communication allows us to convey our thoughts and opinions to others in a clear way. These go hand in hand as people use both during conversation to not only speak their mind, but to express the emotion tied to those words through their body language.
As I was sitting in the nail salon, behind me I heard what sounded to be two older ladies having a conversation while they were getting their nails done. The salon was pretty quiet, other than myself, they were the only other people in the salon. Don’t you know these streets?’” I heard the store owners laugh when the older lady responded with “Oh please”. “Well since you’re driving, after this I would like to go to the salon up the road to see about getting a trim.” She said. “And where exactly is this salon?” the younger lady asked. The older lady responded, “it’s right down the road here”, “I always go there to see Angela, the girl that cuts Wanda’s hair, and I like to go by there to see Linsey and Anthony’s house.”. The younger lady says “There’s a salon right next door, why don’t you just go there?”. To which the older lady said “No, no, I trust Angela. I’ve been going to her for a while now and she always does a god job.”. “Okay, fine.” the other says. Speaking to the nail tech again, the older lady says “I like taking different ways around town, even just down the next block or two, but she never wants to.”. “Well why can’t I go the way I want to go? Why do I always have to go your way? I always take the same way home.” The younger lady said. Ethnography has many benefits, such as being primary research, meaning the information is based on first-hand experiences of the researcher. All information collected is thoroughly detailed, and allows others to compare individual experiences with one another. That being said, it also has it fair share of disadvantages. This method of research is very time consuming and requires that the researcher dedicate their time to their data collection. Another issue with this method is the problem of validity. Considering that this process is often completed alone, there are no others to double check the original researchers work. As previously stated, this method is completed alone most times, sometimes causing the researcher to feel isolated, as they have to dedicate most of their time to their study. Other than ethnographical research, there are many other methods for data collection. For example, Content analysis, which examines cultural artifacts as well as various forms of communication to infer bout social life. Field research, participant observation, and unstructured interviews are other ways that researchers often collect information about individuals and their
