Verbal And Dramatic Irony Essay

The three types of irony in literature are verbal, situational and dramatic. Each type of irony is different and does different things. Irony is the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect. Verbal irony is the use of words to mean something different from what a person actually says. So Verbal irony is almost sarcasm. Dramatic irony is the irony that is inherent in speeches or a situation of a drama and is understood by the audience but not grasped by the characters in the play. Situational Irony occurs when occurs when incongruity appears between expectations of something to happen, and what actually happens instead.
Verbal Irony is the most commonly used out of the three types of irony and more recognizable. There are two types of verbal irony, overstatement and understatement. Overstatement in when when a person exaggerates the character of something. Understatement is when someone under exaggerates something. Sarcasm is also a version but there is a difference. Sarcasm is a insult most of the time while verbal irony is just a different meaning than what is actually said. There is a lot that goes into being verbal irony but a fine line between what is and isn’t.
