Previous studies preformed by Gross and Keller 1992 showed that children that experienced physical abuse had a lower self-esteem. The same results were shown in another study regarding the negative effects of physical abuse on children’s grade in school. The Harter Self-Perception Profile for Children (SPPC), a set of questions that measures self-esteem, was used to gauge the children’s self-esteem. Each child was approximately 10 years old and ranged in sex, race, and financial situations. Children of this age were used in the experiment because at this age, children are generally able to read and understand the questions give them and are less likely to try and portray their parents in a negative way. General questions were asked about the children’s life and details about their family. The information collected showed what type of family structure the children had, number of kids in their immediate family, education of the father and mother, and the gross family income. There were five different times in which the child’s general family life information was not given.
