The focus of the investigation was to determine if there was a difference between males and females in terms of verbal aggression after watching violent media. This was done by collating the data given by the test subjects whilst viewing the violent material (Braveheart). The experiment was based on the testosterone differences often found between men and women. At the beginning of the investigation it was thought that the difference in testosterone levels would correlate to the increase of verbal aggression. The violent media was thought to provoke the test subjects and heighten the aggression levels of the subjects. Aggression is feelings of anger or antipathy resulting in hostile or violent behaviour; readiness to attack or …show more content…
The participants included aged 15 and 16 year old male and females, 14, and 6 respectively. These participants were from a private school which consists of a population from a higher socio-economic and socio-cultural status. This sample space does not accurately depict the wider population as it is a limited age, socio-cultural and socio-economic group.
Some improvements could have been made to create a more consistent and legitimate result. A larger sample size including more diverse age groups could have been used as it was a limited age group. Another improvement to the experiment is a more equal spread of males and females. If the numbers were even it could have affected the experiment and created more of an accurate result.
Some factors affected the validity of the research and results collated from the study. Validity is the quality of being logically or factually sound; soundness or cogency (Dictionary.com, 2016). One of the main factors that could have contributed to an inaccuracy in the results is the research design that was used. The particular research design that was used may have affected the external validity. These results of the experiment could be used to find a direct link between male/female aggression and domestic violence/attacks, which is a growing issue in modern …show more content…
One of the main strengths was the subjective quantitative data that was able to be gathered through this design. Quantitative data is data expressing a certain quantity, amount or range (Wikipedia, 2016). This data is very rich data and is often the key to achieving and accurate set of results. The research design used also had some weaknesses which may have negatively affected the accuracy of the results. The main weakness is social desirability. Social desirability bias is a social science research term that describes the tendency of survey respondents to answer questions in a manner that will be viewed favorably by others (OCED, 2016). This weakness is an uncontrollable variable and something that is up to the participant rather than the conductor of the
