Definition
Venous disorders are the group of pathologies that refers to abnormal functioning of the venous system. Venous disorders fall into two general classifications:
1. Blockage as a result of a blood clot called thrombosis
2. Insufficient venous drainage known as insufficiency
Thrombosis includes:
Superficial Thrombophlebitis
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
Insufficiency comprises of:
Varicose Veins
Spider veins
Chronic Venous Insufficiency
Pathophysiology
Veins are flexible and hollow tubes with flaps like valves inside them. Normally these valves open by the contraction of the muscles and get closed when the muscles relax. In case of venous disorders there is either incomplete or complete failure in …show more content…
CT scan: In cases when swelling occurs severely and it becomes difficult to treat the condition , a CT scan is the option for diagnosis
Role of Physical Therapy
Treatment of venous disorders is emphasized mainly on relieving symptoms like swelling, skin problems, ulcers etc. Here are the treatment options provided by physical therapy:
Elevation of affected leg:
Essentially lifting the legs above heart level for 30 minutes three or four times a day can diminish swelling and enhance blood stream in the veins. Enhancing blood stream can speed recuperating of venous ulcers.
Exercises:
Calf, ankle and foot exercises are frequently prescribed to decrease manifestations of venous disorders. Performing calf stretches and ankle pumping few times in a day can move blood from the legs back to the heart. This might be particularly useful for individuals who sit or remain stand for longer stretches of time. Strolling is a decent practice for the calf muscle to pump venous blood.
Compression therapy:
Compression therapy is considered to be an essential treatment for venous disorders. Compression stockings and bandages are mostly used for this
